MachinistAs a MACHINIST, WG-3414-10, you will perform machining work to manufacture castings, forgings, weldments, and other fabrications; plan and lay out work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, part models, and other specifications and instructions; receive work orders that indicate what work is to be done and plans work accordingly; lay out work by measuring and marking straight lines, arcs, circles, angles, and location points as guides for setting up work pieces for drilling, tapping, turning, milling, boring, reaming, shaping, grinding, honing, and lapping, using a variety of measuring and marking tools, including rules, vernier calipers, inside, outside, and depth micrometers, dial indicators, surface gauges, height gauges, squares, protractors, dividers, and scribers; use trade mathematics and standard handbook formulas in making computations to establish dimensions not provided in verbal instructions or written specifications; set up and operates most types of conventional and/or Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine tools such as lathes; vertical and horizontal boring mills; bench, plane, or universal milling machines; shapers and planers; internal and external grinders, thread grinders; and radial drills; grind and sharpen tools, and selects tools, jigs, and fixtures required to achieve specific dimensions, tolerances, and surface finishes; set up work in vises and between centers, uses chucks, standard faceplates, angle plate mountings, and collets; perform precision handwork to finish, fit, and assemble machined parts; use various bench-mounted and handheld powered and non-powered tools such as files, drills, reamers, and buffers. Performs heat-treating, welding, and soldering.
