Manager Patient Safety Location: VMC Main Campus, Renton, WA. Department: Quality. Full‑time, FTE 1. Hours: Monday – Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM or as needed. Job Overview Responsible for leading and advancing a comprehensive patient safety program across the hospital and affiliated clinic network. This role promotes a culture of safety and drives continuous improvement initiatives to reduce risk and enhance patient outcomes. Provides leadership and oversight to the Patient Safety team within the Quality Department in support of organizational patient safety, quality, and performance improvement goals. Key Responsibilities Lead and advance the organization’s patient safety strategy, promoting a culture of safety and embedding high‑reliability principles across all departments. Partner with clinical and operational leaders to reduce preventable harm, improve system performance, and ensure a proactive, data‑driven approach to safety. Collaborate with leadership to integrate safety practices into daily operations and facilitate continuous daily safety briefings. Responsible for hiring, performance evaluations, and development of patient safety staff. Convene regular meetings with VMC patient safety officers and promote high reliability organization principles. Manage incident reporting systems; conduct root cause analyses and failure mode and effects analyses. Prepare documentation for externally reportable events and submit required reports within regulated timeframes. Manage patient experience survey processes and translate findings into improvement initiatives. Partner with quality improvement teams to design and implement safety initiatives; monitor key patient safety indicators. Facilitate the Patient and Family Advisory Committee and integrate patient perspectives. Serve on the Workplace Violence Prevention Program Committee and implement mitigation strategies. Lead TeamSTEPPS training and develop patient safety education programs. Work closely with Risk Management, Quality, Infection Prevention, and clinical teams to identify and mitigate risks. Perform other duties as assigned. Prerequisites Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is required. A master’s degree (MSN, MHA, MPH, or related) is preferred. Current RN license to practice in WA state is required. Minimum five (5) years of relevant clinical healthcare experience, including one year in a leadership capacity. Qualifications Strong knowledge of patient safety principles and high‑reliability organization practices. Expertise in root cause analysis and performance improvement methodologies. Experience with TeamSTEPPS or similar teamwork frameworks. Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and organizational skills. Strong communication and leadership abilities. Ability to influence change across multidisciplinary teams. Experience establishing and nurturing relationships with departmental teams, providers, leaders, and others. Effective communication with all levels of internal and external customers. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and protocols. Support staff in maintaining a positive work environment and fostering teamwork. Ability to communicate concerns and recommendations through appropriate channels. Maintain confidentiality and protect patient data. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, RLDatix, Joint Commission, CMS, and DOH applications. Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) or Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) preferred. Knowledge of performance and process improvement (PPI) science and project management. Knowledge of hospital operations and safety regulatory requirements (CMS, JC, WA State WAC/RCW, PHD). Physical and Work Conditions Works at a computer for extended periods. Requires travel to various departments and off‑site locations as needed. May require irregular hours and availability for emergency consultations. Additional Information This position may require irregular hours to meet regulatory and internal program goals and deadlines.
