Meat Clerk

Meat Clerk personnel wrap and package cuts of meat and poultry and assist with the proper presentation of all meat department products into coolers for customers.

Essential duties and responsibilities include weighing, labeling and/or packaging meat or seafood to be displayed for customers; lifting and carrying merchandise from back room onto rolling stock cart or directly to display coolers; checking product quality to ensure freshness; labeling, stocking and inventorying department merchandise; maintaining refrigerated cases with appetizing displays of products for sale; assisting customers by answering questions regarding products sold within the department; staying current with present, future, seasonal and special ads; keeping work area clean, orderly, and free from safety hazards; using all equipment in meat department properly; maintaining all requirements for sanitary work area to keep food safe from contamination; when working the end of day shift, completing all required cleaning procedures; reporting all accidents promptly according to company procedures; attending and participating in departmental and store meetings; punctuality and good attendance in compliance with company policies; and performing other work-related duties as required to accomplish the objectives of the position.

Secondary duties and responsibilities include ensuring country of origin labels and/or signage is correct for department products; reporting product ordering/shipping discrepancies to the department manager; staying current with present, future, seasonal and special ads; assisting with customer areas of Meat, Deli and Seafood when needed; and assisting with unloading and/or verifying merchandise off meat delivery trucks when needed.

Minimum requirements include a high school diploma or general education degree (GED) and minimum of 18 years of age; current food safety training certificate required and must be renewed every three (3) years. Competencies, skills and/or qualifications include ability to use department equipment properly to accomplish essential duties of the position; ability to read, write and speak English and Spanish preferred; ability to understand and follow instructions in both English and Spanish preferred; ability and willingness to effectively present information and respond to questions in one-on-one and small group situations with managers, co-workers and customers; good interpersonal skills; takes responsibility for own actions; ability to work hours and days scheduled, including holidays and weekends; basic math and numerical skills required including weights, measures and identifying product codes; ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral or diagram form; and demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness.

Physical demands include standing in one place for extended periods of time; walking; use of fingers and hands; reaching with hands and arms; use of repetitive motion with arms; talking and hearing; use of sense of smell; close vision, eye-hand coordination and peripheral vision; carrying, lifting and/or moving departmental products and merchandise; pushing and pulling carts of departmental products and merchandise; stooping or bending at the waist; twisting back and/or neck; crouching or bending at the knees; sitting; climbing; and balancing.

Work environment includes performing duties in a grocery store environment; maintaining frequent contact with supervisors, employees and customers; moderate noise level in the work environment; frequent use of gloves, knives, wrapping devices, meat and cheese slicers, case cutter, stock cart, refrigerators, freezers, coolers, and cleaning supplies and equipment; slippery floor surfaces requiring caution and safety; and proper attire required to tolerate freezing temperatures.
