Duties and Responsibilities

• Supports Hawaiian and Pacific Collection librarians in their collection development activities.
• Evaluates department operations, analyzes data, and makes recommendations for improving department operations to the Department Chair.
• Coordinates reformatting projects to support the preservation and increased digital access of the collections.
• Prepares, analyzes, interprets, and reports on the department's annually allocated funds; creates quarterly reports or reports significant changes, to supervisor in compliance with University policies and procedures and state and federal rules and regulations.
• Drafts descriptive records for department collections for the purpose of enhancing patron access. Applies or adapts current standard metadata policies, principles, and methods.
• Applies metadata standards to enhance access and discoverability of the Hawaiian and Pacific Collections.
• Recruits, hires, supervises, trains, schedules, and evaluates student assistants; manage related budgets and timekeeping records.
• Maintains and updates the Hawaiian and Pacific Collections Department web presence to ensure accuracy and currency.
• Develops internal documentation and provides training on local policies, ensuring clarity and compliance.
• Actively participates in professional development opportunities and monitors industry trends to identify, evaluate, and implement emerging library technologies, systems, and standards that enhance library services and workflows.
• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Possession of a baccalaureate degree in humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, computer sciences, Hawaiian Studies, Pacific Island Studies or related field and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for library services; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of library operations and services as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
• Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with supporting library services in a specialized collection.
• Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
• Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
• Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing, and experience with other library-related programs, such as LibGuides and Gimlet.
• If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.

Supplemental Minimum Qualifications

• Ability to evaluate operations, analyze data, and make evidence-based recommendations for improvement.
• Experience preparing and reporting on allocated funds in compliance with institutional and governmental policies. Proficiency with databases, spreadsheets, and office productivity software for compiling, managing, and presenting data.
• Knowledge of collection management, acquisitions, metadata creation, digital preservation, or web archiving.
• Skill in drafting, proofreading, and editing accurate reports, descriptive records, and procedural documentation.
• Experience supervising and training in technical processes, specialized equipment, and software use.
• Strong organizational, planning, and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
• Commitment to ongoing professional development and adoption of emerging library technologies and standards.
• Knowledge of Hawaiian and/or Pacific Islands topics.

Desirable Qualifications

• Familiarity with olelo Hawaii and/or other Pacific Islands languages.
• Coursework in Hawaiian Studies, Pacific Islands Studies, or Library and Information Science.
• Familiarity with University of Hawaii at Manoa Library systems, policies, and procedures.
• Demonstrated adaptability and willingness to learn new tools and processes.
• Functional understanding of statistical concepts and sampling methodologies.
• Demonstrated interest in and ability to learn emerging technologies used in academic libraries.
• Knowledge of library and archives descriptive standards.
