Radiation Control Technician Team Supervisor

As a Radiation Control Technician (RCT) Team Supervisor , you will play a critical role in maintaining robust safety programs and providing technical field support to ensure the safe and compliant use of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation sources, accelerators, and nuclear materials. You will work closely within the Radiation Protection Group in our Environment, Waste, and Radiation Protection (EWRP) Department to oversee and direct the work of the Radiation Control Technicians (RCTs) who support radiological work across the Laboratory. This role provides subject matter expertise on radiation protection, radiological materials, and radiation-generating devices to the entire Laboratory radiation worker community, which includes supporting World Class scientific facilities such as the Advanced Light Source synchrotron, the 88-Inch Cyclotron, the Berkeley Lab Laser Accelerator Facility (BELLA), the Molecular Foundry, the National Center for Electron Microscopy, the Glenn T Seaborg Center and many other facilities of note using radioactive materials or radiation generating devices. The RCT Team Supervisor will also have the opportunity to support significant projects such as the Advanced Light Source Upgrade Project, the search for Element 120, the upgrade to the 88-Inch Cyclotron ion source and continued novel accelerator research and development at the BELLA. The incumbent ensures compliance with regulatory requirements by managing key program documents and applying sound judgment in the implementation of policies and procedures. The position directly supervises non-exempt Radiation Control Technicians (RCTs) within the Radiation Protection Group. What You Will Do: Technical Support Team Supervision Provide direct supervision to non-exempt Radiation Control Technicians (RCTs) and other assigned staff. Plan and conduct cross-training; assess staff performance and implement corrective actions as needed. Develop or support the creation of Work Planning and Control (WPC) documents, survey plans, radiological authorizations, procedures, and training materials. Review and contribute to operations-related procedures, policies, and technical work documents. Ensure implementation of all required safety practices, including surveys, dosimetry, postings, labeling, training, and documentation. Field Support Provide guidance and recommendations to research and operations personnel to ensure effective and compliant implementation of radiation protection policies, programs, procedures, permits, work control documents, and regulatory requirements. Analyze and interpret radiological safety engineering principles and ALARA concepts to help maintain a safe workplace for personnel performing radiological work. Conduct radiological hazard and ALARA reviews; evaluate work plans and develop safety controls to support safe work execution. Respond to radiological emergencies, investigate incidents, and prepare formal reports. Develop and deliver radiation safety training to Laboratory personnel. Plan and observe work activities to verify compliance with radiation protection requirements and ensure safe work practices. Build and maintain strong working relationships with Laboratory personnel, anticipating needs and providing radiation protection input during planning and implementation of their work. Technical Program Support Develop and maintain technical program documentation, software, and hardware for assigned subject areas, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations and standards. Evaluate the performance of assigned technical programs and recommend improvements as needed. Prepare and submit regulatory reports, responses to information requests, and other required documentation. Quality Assurance Review and analyze radiation protection survey and inspection results to ensure quality, procedural compliance, and adherence to best practices. Independently conduct audits and assessments of assigned areas and programs; identify deficiencies and recommend improvements. What is Required: RCT Team Supervisor Level 3: The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years of operational radiation protection field experience, and also a Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Radiological Engineering, Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Proven experience supervising exempt and/or non-exempt staff, with the ability to provide clear, concise direction to a diverse team. Comprehensive knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations governing radioactive materials, radiation-generating devices, accelerators, and radioactive material transportation. Broad expertise in operational health physics principles and practices applicable to research environments. Must meet and maintain qualifications as a DOE Radiological Control Technician. Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to address complex technical and regulatory challenges using independent judgment and original solutions. Ability to anticipate program needs and collaborate with RPG personnel to plan and implement improvements and regulatory responses. In Addition to the Above, RCT Team Supervisor Level 4: Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Radiological Engineering, Engineering, or a related field with more than 15 years of relevant experience; or Master’s or PhD. Desired Qualifications: Familiarity with DOE accelerator and/or nuclear facility operations Possession of relevant professional certifications. Additional information: Appointment type: This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay. Salary range: The RCT Team Supervisor Level 3 position is expected to pay $135,000 - $164,000, which fits within the full salary range of $119,580 - $201,780. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and aligned with the internal peer group. The RCT Team Supervisor Level 4 position is expected to pay $158,000 - $194,000, which fits within the full salary range of $140,748 - $237,504. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and aligned with the internal peer group.
