How you will make history here As a leader within Campbell’s Corporate Food Safety & Quality organization, the Director, Chemical Safety, Toxicology and Analytical Chemistry is responsible for providing enterprise leadership, strategy, technical governance, and subject matter expertise for chemical safety, food toxicology, ingredient safety, and analytical chemistry across Campbell’s commercialization, manufacturing network, laboratories and supply base. This role serves as Campbell’s senior technical authority for chemical hazard identification, toxicological risk evaluation, ingredient and packaging safety, and science-based decision-making. The position partners closely with R&D, Regulatory Affairs, Procurement, Supplier Quality, Operations, Legal, Packaging, Quality, and external technical experts to protect consumers and the Brand, maintain regulatory compliance, and proactively mitigate risk. What you will do Develop and execute the enterprise strategy for chemical safety and food toxicology, including standards, policies, risk-based decision criteria, and technical governance for chemical contaminants, ingredients, processing-related hazards, packaging and food contact materials, and analytical testing. Serve as the company’s subject matter expert for toxicological risk assessment, chemical hazard evaluation, exposure assessment, and interpretation of scientific literature, regulatory guidance, supplier data, analytical results, and external expert opinions. Provide chemical safety review and approval for ingredients and food contact materials through Campbell’s commercialization and ingredient approval processes Partner with internal analytical laboratories and external laboratory networks to guide testing strategies, method selection, data interpretation, proficiency expectations, laboratory priorities, and escalation of results requiring toxicological or regulatory review. Lead technical response for chemical safety incidents, supplier non-conformance, consumer and customer inquiries, regulatory requests, and other escalations. Monitor and evaluate evolving scientific, regulatory, consumer, customer, NGO, and legislative trends related to chemical safety, toxicology, contaminants, additives, packaging, GRAS, food contact materials, and global food safety expectations. Develop proactive risk mitigation plans, business position recommendations, communication materials, and escalation summaries for senior leaders and cross-functional stakeholders on current and emerging chemical safety matters. Represent Campbell’s in selected external scientific organizations, trade associations, technical panels, and regulatory forums to influence outcomes, strengthen external networks, benchmark best practices, and advance Campbell’s scientific and regulatory strategies. Build internal capability through training, coaching, and cross-functional education on chemical hazard awareness, toxicology fundamentals, risk assessment principles, analytical interpretation, and emerging risk management. Establish impactful metrics, dashboards, and reporting mechanisms to monitor chemical safety risks, program effectiveness, incident trends, laboratory performance, and progress against enterprise food safety priorities. Standardization of lab testing equipment and methods across the manufacturing network as applicable Operates as an enterprise-level technical authority to safeguard consumer safety, regulatory compliance, innovation timelines and business continuity. Evaluates complex scientific information from analytical chemistry results, toxicology literature, supplier documentation, global regulatory standards, exposure models, food contact evaluations, customer requirements, and cross-functional business inputs. Balances sound scientific judgment, regulatory expectations, operational feasibility, consumer trust, and business continuity when making risk-based decisions. Provides rapid technical support for critical incidents, recalls, regulatory inquiries, consumer-related escalations, customer concerns, and supplier disruptions, including support outside normal business hours when needed. Influences senior leaders and cross-functional teams without always having direct authority, requiring strong communication, collaboration, technical credibility, and practical decision-making. Who you will work with Reporting into VP Food Safety Quality What you will bring to the table… (Must Have) Bachelor's Degree 15+ years of progressive experience in food, beverage, consumer packaged goods, ingredient, packaging, or related technical environments. Demonstrated leadership in chemical safety, food toxicology, ingredient risk assessment, analytical chemistry, food contact materials, contaminant evaluation, regulatory toxicology, or related food safety disciplines. Experience leading technical governance, enterprise standards, cross-functional risk decisions, external laboratory strategies, incident response, and regulatory or customer-facing technical matters. Experience interfacing directly with FDA, USDA, EPA, state agencies, international regulatory bodies, or customer regulatory and food safety teams. Experience participating in or leading industry association panels, scientific working groups, or external advisory forums such as GMA/CBA, IAFNS, AOAC, FARRP, Codex-related forums, or other specialized technical organizations. Experience with food manufacturing environments, supplier quality systems, co-manufacturers, ingredient commercialization, food packaging, external laboratories, and analytical chemistry program oversight. Knowledge of laboratory procedures and analytical equipment including GC/MS, LC/QTOF, and ICPMS. Experience in managing and developing technical teams. It would be great if you have… (Nice to Have) Ph.D. in Toxicology, Food Toxicology, Food Science, Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, or a related scientific discipline strongly preferred; Board certification by the American Board of Toxicology or equivalent specialized toxicology credential preferred. Certifications or training in HACCP, PCQI, Lead Auditor, ASQ, Lean Six Sigma, risk assessment, regulatory science, or related technical disciplines preferred Deep expertise in food-relevant chemical hazards, including pesticides, heavy metals, acrylamide, mycotoxins, allergens at chemical safety interfaces, process contaminants, packaging migrants, food additives, colors, flavors, preservatives, and emerging contaminants. Strong working knowledge of U.S. and global food regulatory frameworks and standards relevant to finished products, ingredients, additives, contaminants, GRAS, food contact materials, packaging, Codex, FDA, USDA, EPA, state-level requirements, and customer expectations. Strong understanding of analytical chemistry methods, laboratory operations, data quality, method validation, uncertainty, exposure calculations, toxicological thresholds, and interpretation of testing results for decision-making. Demonstrated ability to translate complex scientific and regulatory information into clear, concise, practical recommendations for senior leaders, Legal, Regulatory, R&D, Quality, Procurement, Operations, and external stakeholders. Proven ability to anticipate business risks and opportunities, develop proactive mitigation plans, manage issue response, and support crisis management with sound scientific judgment. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to develop technical positions, executive summaries, external responses, training materials, and governance documents. Strong collaboration, influencing, and relationship-building skills across corporate functions, plants, suppliers, co-manufacturers, regulators, trade associations, scientific organizations, and external experts. Strong program management, change management, prioritization, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with a practical, risk-based mindset. Quality and usefulness of chemical safety metrics, dashboards, horizon scanning, and senior leadership reporting. Compensation and Benefits The target base salary range for this full-time, salaried position is between $170,200-$234,100 Individual base pay depends on work location and additional factors such as experience, job-related skills, and relevant education or training. Total pay may include other forms of compensation. In addition, we offer competitive health, dental, 401k and wellness benefits beginning on the first day of employment.
