Senior Software Engineer, Data Infrastructure (RDBMS) [Remote]

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Software Engineer, Data Infrastructure (RDBMS) based in United States.

As a Senior Software Engineer, Data Infrastructure (RDBMS), you will design, operate, and scale relational database infrastructure supporting petabyte-scale data workloads. You will own critical parts of the serving layer, from query performance and schema design to availability, reliability, and infrastructure cost. Working with PostgreSQL and distributed database technologies, you will help ensure customer-facing systems remain fast, resilient, and scalable. The role combines deep database engineering with automation, observability, data replication, and AI-assisted development. You will collaborate with experienced engineers in a distributed, async-first environment where technical ownership and operational excellence are highly valued. Accountabilities:

• Develop, operate, and scale highly available relational database infrastructure supporting petabyte-scale workloads.

• Own query performance, index design, schema optimization, and database tuning for production PostgreSQL and distributed PostgreSQL environments.

• Maintain high availability and performance for customer-facing systems by identifying and resolving database bottlenecks.

• Use AI-assisted analysis and database profiling tools to identify opportunities for storage, compute, compression, and data-model optimization, then validate and deploy improvements safely.

• Build agentic automation for routine database operations, including connection-pool provisioning, disk scaling, blue-green deployments, and other self-service workflows.

• Develop safeguards and automated validation processes to protect data integrity and system performance before database changes reach production.

• Manage change-data-capture and replication pipelines using technologies such as PeerDB, Fivetran, Debezium, Datastream, or Airbyte.

• Investigate and resolve replication failures and other database reliability issues, leveraging AI tooling where appropriate to accelerate troubleshooting.

• Contribute to platform modernization efforts by migrating workloads from legacy infrastructure and evaluating or prototyping new data-storage technologies.

• Develop AI-native runbooks, internal tooling, and reusable workflows that increase engineering efficiency and reduce operational toil.

• Partner with product and engineering teams to coordinate schema changes and infrastructure improvements across multiple teams and product initiatives.

• Participate in an on-call rotation and support the reliability of production database infrastructure.

• Contribute to technical documentation, written decision-making, and a culture of operational excellence and continuous improvement.

Requirements:

• 5–8 years of experience building and operating production PostgreSQL environments, including technologies such as Citus, Aurora, AlloyDB, or equivalent distributed PostgreSQL systems.

• Deep SQL optimization expertise, including Explain Plans, CTEs, window functions, partitioning, index design, and query-planner behavior in distributed environments.

• Strong understanding of relational database architecture, performance tuning, scalability, availability, and reliability.

• Hands-on experience with CDC and replication technologies such as PeerDB, Fivetran, Debezium, Datastream, or Airbyte.

• Experience with database profiling and performance analysis tools such as pganalyze or equivalent, including the ability to interpret metrics, logs, and performance data.

• Production automation experience using Python, Go, or comparable programming languages.

• Experience designing or implementing automation for routine database and infrastructure operations; PostgreSQL extension development is a plus.

• Strong experience using AI coding and analysis tools such as Claude or Copilot to accelerate development, troubleshoot systems, and improve output quality.

• Sound judgment when working with AI-generated output, including the ability to evaluate, validate, modify, or reject AI recommendations when necessary.

• Demonstrated experience using AI-assisted analysis to achieve measurable improvements in database performance, reliability, or infrastructure costs.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate complex technical issues and develop practical solutions.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across distributed engineering teams.

• Comfortable working in an async-first environment with written technical specifications, decision documents, and purposeful synchronous collaboration.

• Ability to operate effectively in a fast-moving environment with evolving priorities, ambiguity, and a high degree of individual ownership.

• Willingness and ability to participate in an on-call rotation, subject to applicable regional requirements.

Benefits:

• Estimated annual base salary for the role is US$200,000–US$220,000 , with compensation adjusted for applicable geographic factors outside the United States.
