School Bus Driver

Overview Responsible for operating a school bus and transporting school‑aged children and other authorized personnel safely. Performs janitorial duties. Assist in the fulfillment of the organization’s vision and mission. Duties and Responsibilities Ensure all passengers are properly secured. Operate wheelchairs lift properly for loading and unloading passengers. Ensure all wheelchair equipment is stored properly prior to vehicle movement. Maintain good rapport with passengers, activity centers, staff, care providers and other staff. Attend mandatory required training and various meetings regarding safety and first aid. Safely transport children and staff from designated pick‑up and drop‑off locations. Transport children and staff to special events, such as field trips and other events as needed. Conduct safety and operational inspection of assigned vehicle daily and submit daily vehicle condition report. Maintain a safe environment within the bus by enforcing rules of conduct and responding to emergencies. Move furniture and transport supplies as needed. Operate yard maintenance equipment and hand tools as needed. Ensure the bus can be operated safely before driving and conduct pre‑trip safety inspections as required by federal and state laws, including visual defect checks and operating system checks such as brakes, horn, lights, emergency flashers, extended stop arms, and door‑opening devices. Maintain cleanliness of vehicle to ensure safe operating condition. Report needed mechanical repairs when necessary. Perform janitorial duties at Head Start sites as assigned, including sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, cleaning and sanitizing, using compounds such as soaps, waxes, chemicals and other supplies. Travel for work related business using personal or organization’s vehicle. Maintain regular attendance and punctuality. Work evenings and weekends as required. Perform other duties as assigned. Split Shift 6:00 am – 9:30 am and 1:00 pm – 4:30 pm, 6 hours per day. Qualifications To execute this job successfully, a candidate must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Minimum of six (6) months of related experience, including safe operation of motor vehicles with a commercial A or B license with Air Brakes, Passenger (P)/School Bus Endorsement (S). Must be at least 21 years of age. Possess and maintain a valid commercial A or B license with passenger/school bus endorsement. CPR and First Aid Certified. Ability to use two‑way radio. Ability to drive in all‑weather conditions. Ability to read and follow maps. Possess basic janitorial skills and knowledge of cleaning solutions and janitorial equipment. Willing to work non‑traditional hours and days to meet the position requirements. Maintain a valid California driver’s license, reliable transportation, and auto insurance in compliance with state law, and meet the organization’s insurance requirements for operating organization vehicles. Pass required drug and alcohol testing prior to employment; will be subject to continual urine and breath testing throughout employment. Pass required background investigation, including medical examination and TB clearance, acceptable criminal record statement, Department of Justice fingerprint clearance, and child abuse index clearance. Physical Demands Employee regularly required to sit and talk or hear, frequently walk, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms, occasionally stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Must frequently lift and move up to 10 pounds, occasionally lift up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
