Associate Substation Structural Engineer Date: Jun 25, 2026 Location: Overland Park, KS, US; Bloomington, MN, US; Burlington, MA, US; Chicago, IL, US Company: Black & Veatch Family of Companies (Black & Veatch Corporation) The Opportunity As an Associate Substation Structural Engineer, you will: Perform structural design engineering and analysis on substation scopes. Collect and assimilate data for engineering work; perform research and prepare calculations according to Black & Veatch and industry standards on larger and more complex assignments. Develop recommendations for equipment and materials, expanding knowledge into other disciplines. Work within budget, project schedule, and quality requirements. Provide guidance to engineering team members. Maintain positive client relations through effective communication. Key Responsibilities Execute structural analysis, perform calculations, and prepare sketches and drawings for supporting structures and foundations for substation equipment and other energy infrastructure. Assist with generating project‑specific specifications and the procurement process. Work with structural technicians on preparation of structural drawings and specifications. Assist with construction phase engineering duties such as site visits, responding to RFIs, and review of contractor submittals. Coordinate with other discipline engineers for project alignment. Focus on internal client needs while understanding external client interests and drivers. Preferred Qualifications Basic knowledge of Structural Engineering design principles and applicable design guides and standards. Experience with structural steel design using 3D analysis and design software such as RISA 3D, STAAD Pro, or equivalent. Experience with foundation design using analysis and design software such as LPile, RISA Foundation, SP‑Mats, etc. Experience performing structural connection and miscellaneous calculations using MS Excel and/or Mathcad. Strong written communication, drive for results, priority setting, planning, and listening skills. Experience in the energy sector (substations, power generation, renewables) is a plus. Experience designing equipment structures and their foundations is a plus. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited program. Minimum of 1 year related work experience. Ability to complete pre‑employment onboarding requirements (background check, drug screen, motor vehicle records search). Work Environment / Physical Demands Some positions may be relocation eligible. Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment.
