Job Summary As a leader of the health care team, directs shift-to-shift and/or departmental operations and provides professional nursing care, including utilizing the nursing process in accordance with established standards of care, policies, and procedures. Participates in effective resource allocation by assuring appropriate patient assignments, staffing, and scheduling. Essential Responsibilities Formulates a goal-directed plan of care when and where appropriate to do so. Implements care in a thorough, skillful, consistent, and continuous manner. Establishes patient care priorities based on essential patient needs and availability of unit resources (time, personnel, equipment, and supplies). Supervisory Responsibilities The incumbent motivates and provides clinical direction to other employees, but does not have the authority to hire, fire, discipline, nor effective input into such. Nursing Process Provides competent Emergency nursing care, for all ages, acuities and conditions in the population the facility serves. Within scope of role, demonstrates initiative, followup and flexibility in the resolution of staffing issues. Ensures provision of care is consistent with EMTALA, Nurse Practice Act, Title 22 and other applicable regulations and laws, including patient confidentiality and risk management. Supports and ensures teamwork with all internal and external departments and agencies involved in the provision of care. Serves as a leader of the health care team; delegate tasks appropriately, and demonstrates appropriate accountability. Must be charge over five (5) or more employees, of which at least 1 must be another Registered Nurse, unless this requirement is waived by the employer. Maintains knowledge of Emergency Department functions in a disaster scenario. Maintains all required licenses, certifications and professional development/continuing education requirements per department and facility standards. Works within scope of practice, including standardized procedures, and communicates clearly with all members of healthcare team. Performs other related duties as necessary. Provides MSE reflecting sound clinical knowledge and judgment, and consistent with Standardized Procedure and State/ Federal regulations. Performs assessment/data collection in an on-going systematic manner, focusing on physiologic, psychosocial, cultural, spiritual and cognitive status; also nutrition, pain, patient/family education, family involvement and patient advocacy. Proficient in emergency responses such as resuscitation/ codes, hazmat response, and emergency childbirth. Provides care consistent with National Patient Safety Goals, medication safety procedures and other standards adopted by the facility to ensure patient safety. Completes duties with regard to safety practices and policies, including infection control, workplace safety, and management of aggressive behaviors. Documents patient care in a timely, accurate, and concise manner. Documentation reflects nursing process including reassessments in evaluating effectiveness of care. As leader, keeps current on new relevant information related to electronic records, including downtime procedures. Basic Qualifications Experience At least two (2) years practicing as a Registered Nurse One year recent (within the last three years) experience as a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department. Education High School Diploma/GED Graduate of an accredited registered nursing program and completion of the current hours required by the BRN of RN student clinical experience; OR Graduate of registered nursing program and either 1) 2000 hours of RN experience in clinical area of specialty from a licensed acute care facility within three (3) years of graduation; or 2) graduate of an accredited licensed vocational nursing program that includes clinical student experience in acute care and has worked 2000 hours as a licensed vocational nurse within the clinical area of specialty within three (3) years before graduation.
