As a Lab Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting laboratory professionals by performing essential daily tasks that ensure accurate testing and specimen handling. You'll work behind the scenes to maintain laboratory efficiency and uphold safety standards, contributing directly to the accuracy and reliability of patient results.
Responsibilities:
- Receive, sort, and properly process laboratory specimens, ensuring accurate documentation and labeling.
- Perform routine instrument maintenance on laboratory equipment to support smooth operations.
- Prepare specimens at workstations, including building worklists, aliquoting samples, inspecting specimens for abnormalities, and inoculating or preparing slides.
- Prepare reagents and media used in testing procedures.
- Conduct quality assurance and quality control activities, including monitoring temperature charts and resolving pending sample lists.
- Manage specimen storage and retrieval, ensuring proper tracking and organization.
- Decontaminate work areas regularly and perform weekly radioactive wipe tests following safety protocols.
- Change gas cylinders and maintain lab safety by following all PPE requirements and safety regulations.
- Operate laboratory computer systems and PCs efficiently for data entry and record keeping.
- Dispose of biohazardous waste safely, adhering to all safety guidelines.
- Maintain accurate documentation, including files for department records.
- Assist with general lab maintenance tasks, such as resolving missing samples, and supporting the overall workflow.
- High school diploma or equivalent; Medical assistant training or background in clinical laboratory settings is helpful.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills to handle multiple tasks efficiently.
- Ability to follow strict safety and infection control procedures, including proper PPE use.
- Basic computer literacy, including proficiency with laboratory information systems.
- Good communication skills, with a professional and courteous approach to interacting with coworkers and external contacts.
- Ability to learn quickly and retain procedural knowledge for consistent performance.
- Physical ability to handle specimen processing tasks and perform laboratory duties productively.
- Experience with laboratory instrumentation maintenance.
- Familiarity with biohazardous waste disposal protocols.
- Prior experience in a clinical or medical laboratory setting.
- Knowledge of radioisotope safety procedures.
- High school diploma or GED required; coursework in math and science preferred.
- Prior experience in a laboratory environment is advantageous but not mandatory for entry-level candidates.
- Certification or training as a Medical Assistant or Laboratory Assistant is a plus.
- Availability to work Tuesday through Saturday, 2:00 AM - 10:30 AM.
- Ability to handle routine lab equipment and materials safely and efficiently.
- Willingness to undergo continuous training and competency assessments.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high accuracy standards.
- Physical strength and dexterity to perform specimen handling and storage tasks.
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and compliance with safety protocols.
