Teaching Associate, UWMDI - Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition

Description The Department of Medicine, Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition at the University of Washington invites applications for an Advanced Practice Provider (APP), which is a faculty position at the rank of Teaching Associate with an anticipated start date of September 2026. We seek applicants who demonstrate commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and service in a diverse and inclusive academic community. The successful candidate will join our faculty on a full-time basis for a twelve-month service period [July 1-June 30]. The base salary range for this position will be $10,834 - $13,334 per month ($130,008 - $160,008 annually), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. This range is inclusive of base salary provided through the UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan, in addition to base salary provided by the University. Please note that only compensation provided by the University is included in University benefit determinations and calculations. Compensation provided by UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan may provide eligibility for separate benefits offered by that organization. The APP will provide consultative specialty diabetes care to patients in coordination with Endocrinologists, certified diabetes educators, and ancillary support staff at the University of Washington Medicine Diabetes Institute (UWMDI). The APP is responsible for providing patient care independently and collaboratively with appropriate privileges, including initial and ongoing assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patient’s medical, physical and psychosocial status. Responsibilities Provide timely initial and ongoing patient assessment for diabetes management. Participate in the assessment, planning, care implementation and evaluation of the hyperglycemic patient requiring urgent outpatient care. Participate in the assessment, planning, care implementation, and evaluation of established patients in the UWMDI. Attend UWMDI Service meetings with UWMDI faculty and support staff. Collaborate with the UWMDI supervising physician, the UWMDI certified diabetes RN’s, the UWMDI certified diabetes educator RD’s, the UWMDI PharmD’s, and other providers to ensure coordination and continuity of diabetes care across settings and over time. Attend appropriate clinical meetings to serve as a resource for staff and providers. Facilitate collaboration with referring care providers to ensure continuity of care. Provide patient and/or family with health education, counseling and referrals to other health professionals and community resources as appropriate. Participate as a key member of the interdisciplinary team through the development of collaborative and innovative practices and evaluation of patient care outcomes. Evaluate quality outcomes for the UWMDI through participation in the development of quality indicators. UWMDI APP Duties The UWMDI APP maintains excellent interpersonal skills to execute the UWMC Best Practice Model. Establish a therapeutic relationship by imparting a commitment to care for the patient and family through the acute illness and beyond. Connect with the patient and family by eliciting the patient/family perspective and validating the value of that perspective using strong empathic listening skills. Communicate with a sense of caring and openness. Communicate effectively with patients and families, appreciating cultural and socioeconomic disparities. The UWMDI APP provides clinical consultation in all the domains of Glycemic Control Consult Service. Patient/family/provider communication about disease and treatment and how it relates to patient values, priorities, and goals of care across the spectrum of care. Articulate recommendations to colleagues with appropriate and specific language in accordance with current standards of practice, develops individualized goals in accordance with shared outcomes by the primary service. The UWMDI APP collaborates with the primary team. Make individualized Glycemic Control Consult Service recommendations. Contribute to the plan of care. Prescribes medications in accordance with the primary service. Order diagnostics/treatments as needed after collaboration with the primary team. Promote a collaborative approach to decision making. Participate in discharge planning meetings to identify and propose solutions for barriers to discharge. Qualifications Current and valid Washington state ARNP or PA Licensure. Graduate Degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program or PA-C Program or foreign equivalent. Nationally certified APP with DEA or foreign equivalent. Proven excellence working in an interdisciplinary collaborative team environment. Effective interpersonal skills, leadership skills, and clinical expertise in the care of patients with hyperglycemia. Training and experience in Diabetes Care and inpatient Glycemic Control management preferred but not required. Certification as an Advanced Diabetes Management ARNP or PA and critical care experience preferred.
