Golf Course Superintendent

The Farms Country Club, a premier private club in Wallingford, Connecticut, is seeking a hands‑on, approachable, and team‑oriented Golf Course Superintendent to lead all aspects of golf course maintenance and agronomic operations. This highly visible leadership role is responsible for delivering exceptional playing conditions, guiding a multi‑generational team, and executing long‑term agronomic and capital improvement strategies. The Superintendent will work closely with the General Manager and collaborate with the Golf Course Committee, Head Golf Professional, Racquets Director, and Pool Director to ensure high‑quality experiences across the entire property. A structured transition will be established with the outgoing Superintendent to support continuity and knowledge transfer. Club Highlights 2025 Maintenance Budget: $1.4M payroll and operating Capital Budget: $200K in 2025, increasing significantly over the next three years Annual Rounds: 25,000 plus 20 outings Staffing: 6 full‑time employees; grows to 13 in season Schedule: Early mornings to late afternoons in season, weekends, and on‑call responsibilities; winters are flexible, with no more than 5 days per week Recently installed capillary bunkers New John Deere equipment fleet Irrigation System: Toro, transitioning to Rain Bird in 2028 Equipment Program: John Deere lease program on a disciplined 4‑year replacement cycle Future Capital Projects 2027: New pumphouse construction and dredging/increasing irrigation ponds 2028: Full Rain Bird irrigation system installation Success Traits The ideal candidate will be: A hands‑on leader who is approachable and visible Comfortable working alongside the team Skilled at managing and mentoring staff across generations Patient, collaborative, and team‑focused Experienced with capital projects, especially irrigation Committed to leaving the property better each day Initial Priorities Observe, listen, and help direct agronomic and operational plans Build confidence and trust with the team and membership Assess course conditions and identify immediate operational needs Begin planning for significant upcoming capital projects Key Responsibilities Direct all golf course maintenance practices, including turfgrass, irrigation, fertility, and pest management Develop and implement agronomic programs that deliver exceptional playing conditions Lead, train, mentor, and manage the maintenance team Manage annual operating and capital budgets Oversee irrigation systems, equipment, and maintenance facility operations Ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations Communicate course conditions and initiatives to the General Manager, Golf Course Committee, and membership Coordinate with golf, racquets, and pool leadership to support operational needs across the property Manage vendor relationships and procurement of materials and services Uphold the club’s motto: “Leave the property better today than yesterday.” Preferred Qualifications Golf Course Superintendent experience, or advanced Assistant Superintendent ready for growth Certificate, Associate’s degree, or Bachelor’s degree in turfgrass management or related field required Strong agronomic knowledge of Northeast growing conditions Proven experience with budgeting and financial oversight Demonstrated leadership and communication skills Connecticut Pesticide Supervisor Certification, or ability to obtain within 60 days Compensation & Benefits Salary range: $130,000 – $145,000 , commensurate with experience Bonus opportunities Health, dental, and vision insurance 401(k) with employer match Life insurance PTO/vacation Short‑term and long‑term disability Continued education support Local and national dues Uniforms Free meals Golf privileges Cell phone allowance #J-18808-Ljbffr Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA)
