Campus Police Officer (RIC) Position Title: Campus Police Officer (RIC) Division: Administration and Finance Division Department: Security and Safety Department Position Type: Staff – Classified Responsibilities Independently perform a full range of tasks involved in the protection, safety, and security of individuals and property at Rhode Island College. Patrol the campus on foot, bicycle and/or in marked police cruisers. Inspect campus buildings and grounds. Guard against fire, theft, damage, defacement, and/or destruction. Maintain order and security on institution premises. Identify and apprehend criminal offenders as permitted within the law and participate in subsequent court proceedings. Provide emergency medical services to the campus community, including first aid to injured or in danger of physical harm. Perform duties in accordance with applicable state and federal laws, college and department rules, regulations, policies, and orders. Ensure all buildings are secured by locking and unlocking as needed. Attend roll call prior to the beginning of a shift. Acquire and record information concerning events that have occurred since the last shift. Reduce opportunities for the commission of crime through preventative law enforcement measures. Facilitate the movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic through enforcement of the Motor Vehicle Code. Proactively identify potential law enforcement problems and communicate the need for services by utilizing the Department Chain of Command. Actively participate in establishing and maintaining security and safety on the College campus. Promote and preserve peace on campus in a variety of settings including campus gatherings, events, debates, and during response to disturbances. Exercise authority consistent with the obligations imposed by the oath of office. Be accountable to supervisory officers and promptly obey all lawful orders. Coordinate efforts with other members of the Department so that teamwork may ensure a continuity of purpose and achievement of Department objectives. Communicate all pertinent information promptly and accurately to supervisors and fellow officers. Acquire and record necessary information, and document the provision of police services to any member of the campus community. File all reports and documents prior to the end of each shift with accuracy and completeness. Ensure property seized, recovered, or taken for safekeeping is properly marked, receipted, and stored prior to the completion of each shift. Maintain equipment properly and regularly in order to keep such equipment in a functional and presentable condition. Care for all assigned Department equipment to prevent unnecessary damage. Carry out all duties in an efficient and professional manner which brings credit to the Officer, the College, the Department, and the law enforcement profession. Assist and provide information to members of the campus community upon request. Courtly explain any instance where the Department does not have jurisdiction and suggest procedures to rectify the problem. Serve and/or deliver warrants, summonses, subpoenas and other official papers promptly in accordance with law and campus policy. Assist Court prosecutors in furtherance of criminal prosecutions as needed; appear in court as summoned and testify in a professional manner. Refrain from excessive force and avoid appearance of bias or prejudice when dealing with the public or those detained. Enforce all laws and ordinances in a fair and professional manner; punctually respond to all assignments. Operate a communications office, including dispatching and keeping police records; perform routine maintenance on police vehicles. Cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in the enforcement of laws and regulations. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Security and Safety, Chief of Campus Police or their designee. Qualifications Education: Possession of a high school diploma or GED plus successful completion of a Rhode Island Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified Police Training Academy curriculum. Experience: Prior employment in a full‑time POST‑certified police officer position, retired or resigned in good standing, with responsibility for arrest and detention of persons in violation of the law. Additional Required Qualifications Must possess valid Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) Certification. Must be physically qualified to perform assigned duties as evidenced by a physician’s certificate. Must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license. Ability to pass a national background criminal investigation (BCI). Ability to pass a state‑approved psychological examination. Must pass a pre‑employment drug screening and any random post‑employment screening. Within 6 months of appointment, acquire and maintain First Responder Certification from the Rhode Island Department of Health. Work Schedule 40 hours/week; 3rd shift, 11:00 PM – 7:00 AM; days off: Tuesday/Wednesday.
