Electronics Mechanic

VETERANS HEALTH ADMINISTRATION

Summary

This position is located within the art of Facilities Management Serviceof the Northern Arizona VA Health Care System (NAVAHCS) located in Prescott, AZ. The Electronics Mechanic is assigned a wide variety of duties involving installation, modification, repair, troubleshooting, maintenance, and testing of electronic systems, controls, and equipment. Systems may include public address, nurse call, security monitoring, access, patient elopement, and closed circuit tv monitoring.

Help

Duties include but not limited to:

  • Independently install, modify, overhaul, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electronic systems of limited complexity.
  • Perform comprehensive maintenance and repair, including preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, test, adjustment, and calibration of electronic equipment of moderate complexity.
  • Test, study, analyze and diagnose the nature and extent of malfunctions or problems, consider any established alternative approaches or techniques for resolution of the difficulty, select the most appropriate and effective of these, and make the necessary corrective adjustments or repair.
  • Work from manufacturers' specifications, schematics, block diagrams, and technical orders, building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls.
  • Determine and place distribution panels, boxes, fittings, connections, install wiring, couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers, and other electrical devices including electrical service entrances.
  • Complete repairs and installation with little or no advice.
  • Initiate purchase orders for Electronics Shop material and parts requirements. This includes but is not limited to chemicals, hardware, equipment repair parts, control repair or replacement of system components, and new equipment.
  • Act as a technical advisor regarding the operation, effectiveness, maintainability, serviceability and utilities, space and environmental requirements of equipment, including interrelationships with other equipment and the physical plant.
  • Skilled in the application and use of a wide variety of electronic test equipment such as multi-meters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, and other specialized instrumentation, which must be maintained and calibrated to assure accuracy and reliability, as well as appropriate hand tools and small power tools.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/04/2026.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

  • Troubleshooting (Electronic Equipment)
  • Use Hand and Power Tools - Electronics
  • Without more than normal supervision

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note : A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: Perform tasks requiring moderate physical exertion, including frequent medium lifting (up to 40 pounds) and occasional heavy lifting (more than 40 pounds) and strenuous exertion. Heavy lifting may require the use of material handling equipment or additional manpower. Pushing, pulling, carrying, climbing, bending, stooping, crawling and negotiating confined spaces may be involved. Incumbent may work in high places. The employee is standing or walking most of the time and must be in good physical condition. Physical capability to regularly walk long distances, dexterity and accurate hand-eye coordination are necessary. Corrected vision to 20/20 and accurate color perception are required.

Working Conditions: Most work is performed inside buildings, usually adequately lighted, heated, ventilated, or cooled. Occasionally work may be performed in very cold, hot or unventilated areas, or outside in inclement weather. Exposure to lubricants and other chemicals, and fumes is common. Electrical shock and burns, and exposure to the physical hazards of electro-mechanical equipment are possible. Exposure to RF energy and biological hazards may occur. Cuts and bruises are also possible.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
