IP Senior Counsel (Digital) - Abbott Diabetes Care

Abbott seeks a Senior Counsel for its Diabetes Care business to manage intellectual property strategy and portfolio development. The role involves directing patent prosecution, analyzing competitor IP, supporting litigation matters, and advising on transactional IP issues across the medical devices sector.

Responsibilities

• Develop and direct worldwide patent portfolio strategy in collaboration with Diabetes Care business leadership
• Manage domestic and international outside counsel for patent application preparation and prosecution
• Review outside counsel work product for methodology, strategy, and cost alignment with Abbott standards
• Conduct competitive analyses of competitor products and intellectual property portfolios
• Solicit invention disclosures, interview inventors, and present at cross-functional patent committee meetings

Requirements

• 7+ years patent law experience in law firm or corporate setting
• JD from accredited law school; admitted to U.S. state bar and USPTO
• Strong patent law knowledge and IP portfolio building experience
• Medical device or similar industry background preferred
• Experience with AI, machine learning, software, and digital inventions in medical devices preferred
• International patent law knowledge and USPTO/EPO proceeding experience preferred

Compensation: $172,000–$344,000 base
