Van Driver

The NorthStar Foundation was founded to focus on the critical, unmet needs of North Omaha’s young men, beginning in third grade, with the goal of helping them grow into healthy, educated, employed contributors to the community. NorthStar is the only single sex, male afterschool program in Greater Omaha. NorthStar is seeking a mature and ultra-reliable driver who can be depended on each day! Van drivers are responsible for establishing and maintaining a safe, healthy, and nurturing environment while transporting the students from schools to NorthStar. The Van Driver is responsible for safely operating NorthStar vehicles, picking up NorthStar youth from various schools, and transporting them back to NorthStar as per the daily schedule. Drivers must maintain order and security in the vehicles and obey all laws, regulations, and rules of conduct. The Van Driver must also deal with residents and members of the public in a courteous and respectful manner. This position reports to the Director of Operations. Essential Job Functions Responsible for the safe operation of NorthStar vehicles. Pick up and deliver students to NorthStar in an efficient manner, per a set daily schedule. Operate 10, 12, or 15-passenger van safely and efficiently, following a designated route, abiding by all federal, state, and local laws, and transportation policies defined in the NorthStar Transportation Manual. Take attendance of youth before or once aboard the vehicle. Ensure students are aware of rules and responsibilities as passengers. Maintain order and discipline on the vehicle. Make note of any behavioral or disciplinary issues. Conduct pre-trip vehicle inspections, perform vehicle walk-through and walk-around before and after each trip. Perform daily safety and maintenance inspection of vehicle including routine cleaning. Track daily mileage in vehicle logbook. Advise the Facility Manager of any requirements for maintenance or repairs. Report same day as to any vehicle issues or damage. Maintain focus while driving, requiring intense concentration. Return vehicle to assigned spot at end of route, perform final inspection, and secure vehicle according to procedures. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities A valid Nebraska driver’s license is required and the ability to pass pre-employment background screening with acceptable driving record. Minimum 21 years of age and must have three or more years of driving experience. Candidate should not have any DUI, DWI, or similar alcohol or drug related offenses within the past five years. Ability to operate a 15-passenger van. High School diploma or GED required; Associate degree preferred. Must possess knowledge of, or the ability to learn accurately and quickly, local street and road systems. Prior experience driving school aged children or multiple passengers is preferred. Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and a safe and violation-free driving record. Knowledge of all driving laws and regulations. Experience and comfort driving in all weather conditions, including rain, snow, ice, extreme cold and heat. Strong communication skills and ability to effectively communicate with school aged children. Maintain a high energy level. Regularly speak clearly and hear the spoken word. Physical and Environmental Conditions Duties are performed in both outdoor and indoor settings. Must be able to stand, walk, and sit for several hours daily. The employee must be physically able to perform and demonstrate emergency evacuation procedures. This includes the pushing/pulling of up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, night/dusk vision, color vision, and peripheral vision. This position is subject to outside environmental conditions, including extreme cold, extreme heat, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.
