About This Role

Overview

An Early Head Start Teacher & Teacher Assistant is responsible for the co-planning, implementing and coordinating a classroom with 6-8 children 0-3 years of age. In collaboration with another Early Head Start teacher, they will ensure the education program is developmentally appropriate and meets the individual needs of the children as mandated by the Office of Head Start, Wisconsin Department of Children and Families, Wisconsin’s quality rating and improvement system - YoungStar, and JO’S policies and procedures. The EHS Teacher must understand children’s cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development to ensure a safe and stimulating classroom environment where children are actively engaged and encouraged to succeed. The EHS Teacher will partner with families and other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes for each child along his/her unique developmental path.

Duties

■ Develops weekly lesson plans and implements age-appropriate curriculum aligned with Head Start Development and Early Learning Framework and Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards and NAC in collaboration with an assistant teacher.

■ Performs on-going developmental assessment of children and develops learning goals related to the outcomes of the assessment that addresses the individual needs of each child.

■ Demonstrates cultural competency and respect for the child's background by incorporating cultural, linguistic and familial values and beliefs into all aspects of classroom environment and activities.

■ Provides a developmentally appropriate classroom environment that reflects the children’s learning and growth. This environment should also be a warm, safe and healthy learning environment that is welcoming to the children and families.

■ Maintains ongoing, open communication with families and colleagues related to the needs and progress of each child.

■ Ensures that each family receives an opportunity to build strong relationships and experiences clear communication with teaching staff.

■ Conducts two parent teacher conferences and home visits a year to discuss children's developmental progress, needs and interests.

■ Serves as a liaison with children's families to ensure smooth transition from home to child care setting and transitions from classroom to classroom when needed.

■ Maintains accurate, complete and timely client and agency records.

■ Completes daily meal and attendance records.

■ Maintains up to date emergency forms, curriculum plans, individual child development profile and other records as needed.

■ Completes daily health checks regarding hygiene, safety, and overall well-being of the children.

■ Reports all staffing and classroom concerns to the supervisor in a timely manner.

■ Reports family changes in schedules and excessive absences to administration in a timely manner.

■ Participates in on-going in-service and educational development opportunities provided by the Agency.

■ Collects in-kind using take-home activities, field trips, and etc.

Safety and Health

• Implement active supervision practices at all times, including transition times.
• Ensure knowledge of each assigned child’s location at all times.
• Ensure medication is stored according to licensing regulations (DCF 251) and JO’S policies and procedures.

Physical Demands/Activity

• Primarily active work; occasionally lifting, holding or moving up to 50 lbs.
• Bending, stooping, kneeling, sitting on the floor, walking/transporting, handling, reaching, climbing, balancing, crouching, crawling, talking and speaking clearly, hearing conversation level, smelling, and seeing; ability to interact daily with children outdoors in varied weather conditions.
• Minimum of an Infant/Toddler CDA or equivalent required
• AA/BA in Early Childhood Education or related field preferred related field of study with a minimum of 30 Credits in ECE
• Physical exam and background checks and fingerprints are required for this position.
• Travel required locally or long-distance up to 10% of the time for work-related meetings and functions.
• A biannual physical exam, drug screen and TB test are required as a condition of initial employment and continued employment.
