Job Summary The Senior Marine Engineer/Designer is responsible for designing and creating ship structures and systems by determining technical requirements, confirming system and product capabilities, and applying various principles to create a successful product. The Senior Marine Engineer/Designer ensures that the customer's specifications are followed, provides production with drawings and ensures that necessary information is provided to successfully manufacture the product. Responsibilities Designs mechanical and electromechanical products and systems by developing and testing specifications and methods. Evaluates mechanical and electromechanical systems while applying principles of mechanics, electrical design, and materials especially aluminum. Research and confirms system and product capabilities by designing feasibility and testing methods and properties. Develops mechanical and electromechanical products by studying customer requirements; researching and testing manufacturing and assembly methods and materials; and soliciting observations from operators. Supports manufacturing processes by designing and modifying equipment for fabricating, building, assembling, and installing components. Assures system and product quality by designing testing methods (i.e. sea trials); testing finished-product and system capabilities; and confirming fabrication, assembly, and installation processes. Develops and issues all production drawings. Researches and implements customer required specifications and equipment. Researches latest generation equipment and outfit. Develops material and design evolution for product improvement in cooperation with other engineers. Supports in conducting weight study and confirmation on all production hulls. Provides engineering information by answering questions and requests to shop floor and other departments. Maintains product and company reputation by complying with government regulations (ABYC Standards). Completes projects by training and guiding technicians. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, participating in professional societies. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed. Required Skills & Abilities Ability to utilize design skills, conceptual skills, quality focus. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software. Proficient with Design Software such as AutoCAD, Rhino, Orca, or Solidworks. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in naval architecture, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or similar field preferred; AA degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or similar field required. Experience working in the mechanical, electrical engineering field preferred. 5‑10 years of experience in boat engineering/design highly preferred. Experience as naval architect preferred. Superior computer skills, with solid experience in Rhino highly preferred. Physical Requirements Position requires prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Ability to work in a manufacturing environment which includes moderate noise exposure, occasionally climbing up steep stairs/steps, walking for moderate periods of time over even and uneven terrain, reaching forward, overhead, and to the sides, etc. Must have listening and hearing ability and visual acuity. Must be able to work in areas at times that are not environmentally controlled. Ability to move/lift/pull/push 50 lbs.
