We’re seeking certified SPECIAL EDUCATION (SPED), ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE GRADES, or SECONDARY EDUCATION TEACHERS to design engaging lessons. Deliver total instructional programs in various academic subjects and learning skills to adults, possibly minors, who have not achieved a mandatory literacy and/or full academic achievement of K-12. Complete weekly reports and documentation in a timely and accurate manner. Collaborate with fellow educators and create a supportive, structured classroom where learning leads to opportunity. Job Duties: Teaches all subjects to students who have not completed full academic achievement, potentially through K-12; when required, provides Special Education services Appropriately implements teacher-designed lesson plans and exhibits collaboration between classroom and Special Education teachers for the benefit of students Accesses students' progress and develops an appropriate education plan Develops and corrects diagnostic tests, maintains educational records, and provides the unit with monthly work evaluations Maintains records of student performance and uses them to guide instructional decisions Maintains the security of all testing instruments Consults with highly qualified teachers on subject matter concerns or questions Teaches various subjects and includes learning experiences appropriate for curriculum goals that are based on principles of effective instruction Creates and maintains a positive learning environment using effective classroom management techniques Escorts and supervises inmates in the education building/classroom Demonstrates effective written and verbal communication skills Collaborates with colleagues to achieve Department and Education Bureau goals Engages in professional development and maintains required certifications Continually adapts to improve instruction and student learning Attends required training sessions and meetings Drives on State business Performs other duties appropriate to the assignment Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs): Knowledge of: Laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures pertaining to the assignment Current instructional methodologies and counseling techniques Appropriate testing procedures and interpretation of specific tests Computers and software sufficient to perform daily tasks Skill in: Written and verbal communication Time management Organization and prioritizing Typing Teaching and facilitation Establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships Ability to: Work in a prison environment Work day and/or evening shifts at any unit teaching post Provide academic instruction and counseling to inmates Learn and adhere to laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures Provide individual and group instruction and education counseling Work cooperatively with other education staff Pre-Employment Requirements: Candidates must have a Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university. Requires a current, valid Arizona Department of Education (ADE) Teaching Certificate in the approved area of Elementary or Secondary Arizona Department of Public Safety Fingerprint Card Employment is contingent on the selected applicant passing a background investigation, a drug test, and possibly a medical/physical examination. If this position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, then the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11). In an effort to maintain a safe environment, all employees are required to take a Tuberculosis (TB) test during their New Employee Orientation and every year thereafter. All newly hired State employees are subject to and must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify). Retirement: Positions in this classification participate in the Correctional Officer Retirement Program (CORP). An Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) teacher, who currently has 5 or more years of credited service, can request a waiver to remain in ASRS.
