Available Shift: Monday-Thursday from 5:30 am to 4:00 pm

Compensation: $28+ per hour

A Brief Summary of This Position

The primary role of the Welding Line Lead is to work closely with the Production Supervisor, Shop Lead, peers, and other departments to contribute to Valmont’s overall success. The Lead must be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results. This position reports directly to the Production Supervisor and is responsible for driving the Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost metrics in the Welding Shop. Effective communication, leadership, teamwork, and motivation with all associates in the work cell while adhering to Valmont’s standards, policies, and procedures are critical for this role.

Essential Functions

• Work closely with your Shop Lead, peers, and other Departments to contribute to Valmont’s overall success.
• Monitor and coach associates on shift to ensure all safety policies and procedures are followed and adhered to.
• Assure tasks assigned to the team are performed productively to maximize the utilization of manpower, machines, and equipment.
• Work closely with team to keep the shift’s toolbox stocked with the necessary items making sure all tools are returned or replaced in timely fashion.
• Set daily direction and clearly communicate expected production standards for the shift. Understand and follow up on daily performance.
• Lead the team in keeping the line clean and properly restocked for the next shift.
• Produce an hourly production record of the cell’s performance, including but not limited to downtime, productivity, and maintenance issues.
• Participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to understand losses, and act to prevent future breakdowns and incidents.
• Promote a continuous improvement climate that encourages suggestions from the team.
• Train, coach, and develop the team to ensure proper operation of assigned work and equipment. Help assess and manage the team’s bench strength.
• Ensure inspection checks and quality assurance occurs to produce high quality products.
• Administer and support company policies and procedures in a fair and consistent manner.
• Support the team and fill in however and wherever necessary to help drive the success of the Line.
• Coach and develop associates to maximize performance in Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost.

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

• Currently Welder C status or higher.
• The ability to pass a forklift driver’s test.
• A working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Outlook.
• Strong leadership skills and the ability to support divisional business objectives.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated ability to accomplish tasks and reach goals through the work of the team.
• The ability to learn/understand all jobs within the work cell.
• The ability to read blueprints and weld symbols.
• The ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
• Knowledge of and ability to use common shop mathematics, in feet, inches, degrees, and fractions, in reading complex prints, and standard specifications.
• The ability to solve problems and make an informed decision based on the situation.
• Communicate and interact with coworkers, at all levels, in a positive manner.
• Effectively interpret and present information both one-on-one and in front of a group.

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

• Associates degree with 5+ years of relevant work experience, or 7+ years relevant experience is preferred.
• A strong working knowledge of QAD
• Demonstrated experience in a Leadership role is preferred.
• Practical hands-on experience in Lean Manufacturing

Educational Background

Must be able to clearly understand, follow, and communicate written and verbal instructions. Needs to be proficient in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, performs decimal conversions, and the use of a tape measure. Must be proficient in the reading of specifications, bills of material, and simple blueprints. Must be able to perform the computer functions / transactions required by the department.

Job Training Skill Development

Must be able to satisfactorily perform all functions of this position within 90 days of starting this position. Must obtain valid Valmont forklift Operator License for all forklifts used in the position.

Decision Making

This job requires the employee to make decisions that affect the quality of the products being manufactured. For example, the employee must recognize when weld quality falls below acceptable levels and take corrective action to ensure repairs are made. Must also have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions and to respond to challenging circumstances.

Physical Effort

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms to push and pull product. The employee regularly is required to walk, talk, climb stairs, sit, and hear. The employee is occasionally required climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or bend. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions

• Occasional exposure to outdoor working conditions and abnormal temperatures which include heat, cold, rain, snow, ice, etc.
• Works around material stacked overhead height.
• Standing and/or working in water.
• High noise level and interior temperature conditions while operating mobile equipment.
• Required to wear all necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) for the position.
