Sr Manager R&D Mechanical Engineering

Senior Manager leading a global mechanical engineering team developing next-generation orthopedic robotic systems for Johnson & Johnson's Joints robotics group. The role combines people leadership with hands-on mechanical design, spanning architecture definition, prototype delivery, and regulatory compliance for medical device products.

Responsibilities

• Lead, mentor, and develop a global mechanical R&D team across USA and France locations
• Define mechanical system architecture and translate clinical requirements into detailed designs and specifications
• Deliver prototypes and production-ready designs on schedule and budget while managing performance-cost-reliability trade-offs
• Establish and oversee verification and validation testing plans; ensure regulatory and quality compliance
• Partner with manufacturing, supply chain, and cross-functional teams to qualify suppliers and support production ramp

Requirements

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or Biomedical Engineering
• 3+ years of people leadership experience managing engineering teams
• Demonstrated experience designing electromechanical systems including actuators, mechanisms, and precision assemblies
• Strong CAD proficiency (SolidWorks, Creo), GD&T, tolerance analysis, and prototyping expertise
• Track record delivering products from concept through verification and manufacturing transfer
• 10+ years hands-on mechanical design with 5+ years in medical device or robotics development (preferred)
• Knowledge of surgical robotics, medical device design controls, and FDA/ISO 13485 regulatory frameworks (preferred)
