Overview FY27: Teacher, Special Education, Primary Grades, Carl Sandburg Learning Center, 1.0 FTE Responsibilities Provide direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and work in collaboration with the general education teacher under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor. Monitor and evaluate outcomes for students with disabilities. Assist in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Serve as the primary classroom teacher for up to 7 students and act as case manager; classroom is supported by a team of paraeducators. Job Specific Information This position is for a special educator who will serve as the primary classroom teacher for up to 7 students. The special educator will serve as case manager and classroom teacher. The classroom is also supported by a team of paraeducators. The wage range for this position is a salary between $64,591 and $131,472 based on education and experience. For information about benefits, please follow the link below. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Knowledge of the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) curriculum for the grade/content range of the position and MCPS special education program. Thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments. Thorough knowledge in methods of teaching elementary math if seeking an elementary position. Understanding of ESSA (2015), IDEA (2004), and related state and federal policies and procedures for special education. Ability to provide instructional support and to adapt instructional programs and materials appropriately. Excellent communication skills and ability to work with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents/guardians. Knowledge of and ability to apply the six performance standards established for the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS). Education, Training, Experience Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in special education. Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment. Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at a level appropriate to the assignment (elementary or secondary). Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience may be considered. Certificate/License: Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education.
