Responsibilities

Major Duties:

• Anesthetize patients for a broad range of surgeries extending from the simplest to the most complex of procedures.
• Evaluate patient's physical and mental status with respect to anesthesia, consulting with the anesthesiologist, if necessary, to evaluate patient's conditions and desired course of action.
• Observe the patient during surgery, to accomplish and maintain the proper level of anesthesia depth and to prevent over-dosage.
• Serve as resource consultant to a wide variety of professional health colleagues, regarding the latest advances in nursing anesthesia and nursing practice.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Basic Requirement for Advanced Practice Nurse (Anesthetist): Degree: A graduate or higher level degree from an accredited professional nursing educational program in Anesthesia is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Licensure: A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Professional Nursing Experience at the GS-12: One or more full years of professional nursing experience which includes administering anesthetics to patients by inhalation, regional, neuraxial, intravenous, local, or topical means; monitoring patients receiving anesthesia care; and providing staff or patient education.

Education

Foreign Education: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
