Custodian

Functions: The Custodian performs routine and scheduled custodial work to maintain City buildings and facilities in a clean, sanitary, safe, and professional condition. The position is responsible for cleaning and disinfecting assigned areas, maintaining restrooms and common spaces, removing waste, restocking supplies, and assisting with facility setup and readiness. The Custodian works independently to identify areas requiring cleaning or attention and promptly reports maintenance needs, facility damage, safety hazards, or conditions requiring repair to the appropriate personnel. Responsibilities and Duties: Cleans and sanitizes City offices, public areas, restrooms, meeting rooms, breakrooms, common areas, and other assigned facilities. Sweeps, vacuums, mops, scrubs, and maintains floors using appropriate cleaning methods and equipment. Cleans and disinfects restrooms, including toilets, sinks, fixtures, mirrors, partitions, floors, and other surfaces. Empties trash and recycling containers and transports waste to designated collection areas. Dusts and cleans furniture, counters, windows, doors, glass, fixtures, and other building surfaces. Cleans and maintains breakrooms and shared employee areas, including counters, sinks, appliances, tables, and related surfaces. Restocks restroom and facility supplies and monitors inventory to identify replenishment needs. Performs periodic detailed cleaning, including floor care, carpet cleaning, interior glass cleaning, and other scheduled or seasonal cleaning activities. Responds promptly to spills, sanitation concerns, and other immediate cleaning needs. Assists with the setup, breakdown, and arrangement of tables, chairs, and furnishings for meetings, training, City events, and other activities. Uses cleaning chemicals, equipment, and supplies according to manufacturer instructions and established safety procedures. Maintains custodial closets, equipment, tools, and supplies in a clean, organized, and secure condition. Identifies and reports damaged fixtures, plumbing leaks, lighting problems, trip hazards, pest concerns, or other maintenance and safety issues. Monitors assigned facilities for unusual conditions and reports concerns requiring maintenance, repair, or additional attention. Secures assigned areas as required, including ensuring designated doors, windows, lights, and spaces are appropriately secured upon completion of work. Coordinates cleaning activities around City operations, meetings, employees, and members of the public to minimize disruption. Maintains cleaning schedules, checklists, supply records, or other documentation as required. Follows applicable safety procedures and uses appropriate personal protective equipment when performing custodial activities. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Cleaning & Sanitation Knowledge of general cleaning, sanitation, and custodial practices. Ability to select appropriate cleaning methods, products, and equipment for different surfaces and conditions. Maintains consistent cleanliness and sanitation standards throughout assigned facilities. Safety & Chemical Handling Safely uses cleaning chemicals, equipment, ladders, and personal protective equipment. Understands and follows product labels, safety instructions, and established procedures. Recognizes unsafe or potentially hazardous conditions and promptly reports concerns. Attention to Detail & Facility Awareness Identifies areas requiring cleaning or attention without relying solely on specific work requests. Recognizes facility damage, maintenance concerns, supply shortages, and potential safety hazards. Maintains City facilities to a consistent and professional standard. Organization & Accountability Manages routine cleaning schedules while adjusting to changing facility needs and priorities. Completes assigned responsibilities independently and within expected timeframes. Properly maintains City cleaning equipment, supplies, and assigned storage areas. Customer Service & Communication Communicates professionally with City employees, officials, contractors, and the public. Clearly communicates supply, maintenance, sanitation, and safety concerns to appropriate personnel. Works effectively around employees and ongoing City operations while minimizing disruption. TRAINING, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE Required: High school diploma or GED. Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions, product labels, and safety procedures. Ability to safely use common custodial tools, cleaning products, and equipment. Preferred: One (1) or more years of custodial, janitorial, commercial cleaning, facilities, or related experience. Experience cleaning offices, public buildings, governmental facilities, schools, or other commercial environments. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. Physical Requirements: Frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, push, pull, and perform repetitive movements. Regularly use hands and arms to operate custodial tools, cleaning equipment, and supplies. Safely climb and work from step stools and ladders as necessary. Frequently lift, carry, push, or pull supplies, trash, equipment, and materials weighing up to 40 pounds and occasionally heavier items with appropriate assistance or equipment. Push and maneuver cleaning carts, vacuums, floor equipment, trash containers, tables, chairs, and similar items. Perform work above shoulder height, near floor level, and in other positions necessary to clean assigned areas. Maintain sufficient vision, coordination, mobility, and manual dexterity to safely perform custodial duties. Perform sustained and repetitive physical activities associated with cleaning and maintaining multiple facilities or large building areas. Work Environment: Work is primarily performed in City offices, public buildings, restrooms, meeting spaces, storage areas, and other municipal facilities. Regular exposure to cleaning chemicals, disinfectants, dust, dirt, waste, odors, and potentially unsanitary conditions. Frequent work on wet or slippery surfaces and around cleaning equipment and supplies. May occasionally perform cleaning activities outdoors or in varying temperature and weather conditions. Regular use of custodial equipment, cleaning chemicals, step stools, ladders, and related tools. Requires appropriate personal protective equipment and adherence to established safety procedures. May occasionally work before or after normal business hours to accommodate meetings, events, or facility needs. Safety Sensitive: This position is a safety-sensitive position.
