Dental Assistant

The Dental Assistant supports dental care delivery by preparing treatment rooms, patients, instruments, materials, and performing procedures in compliance with the dental practice act. The Dental Assistant is responsible for chair‑side duties, assisting Dental Clinicians, and preparing patients for treatment. Primary Functions Obtains and records vital signs, personal information, and medical history. Seats and prepares patients for treatment, arranges dental instruments, materials, medications, and passes them to clinicians as needed. Maintains cleanliness of the oral operating area using suction devices, water sprays, cotton rolls, and related equipment. Sterilizes dental instruments in autoclaves, dry‑heat ovens, or with chemical disinfectants; stores sterilized instruments and maintains asepsis during storage. Exposes and processes dental X‑ray films and mounts and labels them as indicated. Provides postoperative care, oral hygiene instructions, and emphasizes preventive dentistry. Performs four‑handed dentistry tasks: pre‑procedural rinse, signed informed consent, completed radiographs, maintains a dry field, monitors mouth and throat for excess saliva, cleans mirror, maintains light visibility, ensures patient inclination or recline, sets up the room for procedure, and maintains sterile field. Completes radiographs: notes landmarks, obtains periapical images and teeth apex, ensures bitewings show open contacts, identifies all posterior teeth, and performs a diagnostic panorex including TMJ without lead apron interference. Completes EMR documentation: demonstrates competency, enters CDT or ICD codes for procedures (PA bitewing, type of exam, restorative or prosthetic type), and writes accurate clinical notes dictated by providers. Completes the Patient Safety Training curriculum. Performs routine maintenance, lubricating, and cleaning of equipment. Answers telephone calls and performs clerical duties as assigned. Schedules appointments and notifies patients of upcoming or missed appointments. Contributes to clinic flow through teamwork. Completes 8–10 CEUs annually. Performs related duties as required.
