Project Accountant

We are seeking a Project Accountant to support project accounting, job costing, WIP reporting, purchasing, and financial analysis for a growing organization. This role will partner closely with Project Management and FP&A to ensure accurate project financials, monitor profitability, and identify potential risks and opportunities. The ideal candidate has 3–5 years of project accounting experience , with strong knowledge of Work-in-Progress (WIP), job costing, project billing, and percentage-of-completion accounting . This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys project accounting but also wants greater exposure to budgets, forecasting, and forward-looking financial analysis . The successful candidate will be comfortable working independently while collaborating effectively with operational and finance teams. Key Responsibilities Project Accounting & WIP Coordinate with Project Management and FP&A to prepare and reconcile monthly WIP schedules for active general contracting and subcontracting projects. Review project costs incurred to date, progress billings, estimated costs to complete, percentage of completion, and over/under billings. Perform detailed job cost variance analysis at the cost-code level, comparing estimated versus actual costs. Investigate and resolve discrepancies between project/WIP reporting and the general ledger. Ensure accurate accounting for contract assets, contract liabilities, deferred revenue, and related project balances. Prepare monthly WIP roll-forwards, project profitability analysis, backlog reporting, and change order/claims tracking. Analyze project P&L and margins on a quarterly basis, identifying drivers of margin improvement or erosion. Identify margin fade/gain trends and proactively flag projects with financial risk. Maintain the integrity and accuracy of the job costing system. Monitor project budgets, actual costs, commitments, and remaining costs. Analyze project performance and provide financial insight to Project Management and leadership. Assist with developing and maintaining project budgets and forward-looking cost projections/forecasts . Support estimating, billing, and project financial control improvements. Help identify trends and provide analysis that supports better project-level decision-making. Purchasing & Fixed Assets Respond to requests for purchases of operational services and fixed assets. Process purchasing requests from the initial request for bid (RFB) through approval, change orders, and final billing. Collect and track purchase requests and communicate with vendors and third parties regarding purchase order status, changes, and closure. Develop and maintain supporting schedules for complex, multi-phase fixed asset projects. Track project costs, approvals, commitments, and timelines to ensure accurate financial reporting. Support the allocation of shared costs across entities and projects. Multi-Entity Operations & Materials Analysis Analyze plant production costs, including crushing, asphalt, and materials processing. Monitor unit cost per ton/yard and analyze variances against standard or expected costs. Analyze and reconcile inventory levels, valuation, and turnover. Support accounting and financial analysis across multiple entities and operating locations. Partner with operations to understand cost drivers and identify opportunities for improved financial performance. Qualifications 3–5 years of project accounting experience required. Strong experience with: Work-in-Progress (WIP) Job costing Project billing Percentage-of-completion accounting Project P&L and profitability analysis Cost and budget variance analysis Experience supporting month-end close and account reconciliations. Strong Excel skills and ability to work with detailed financial data. Experience working with an ERP, job-costing, or project accounting system. Construction, contracting, manufacturing, materials, or related industry experience is highly desirable. Experience with budgets, forecasting, or financial projections is a strong plus.
