Oregon State University
Department: Earth, Ocean & Atmo Sci (OAS)
Appointment Type: Academic Faculty
Job Location: Corvallis
Recommended Full-Time Salary Range: Salary is commensurate with skills, education and experience.
Job Summary:
The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for a part-time (0.75 FTE), 12-month, tenure-track, Assistant/Associate/Full Professor position. Appointment at the Assistant Professor rank is anticipated; however, appointment at a promoted rank may be considered depending upon the qualifications of the successful candidate.
Any hiring at the rank of Associate Professor/Professor with indefinite tenure will be subject to a successful out-of-cycle tenure review process: https://academicaffairs.oregonstate.edu/resources-policies-legislation/policies-and-resources/promotion-and-tenure-guidelines/out-cycle.
This position holds the R. S. Yeats Endowed Professorship in Active Tectonics and Earthquake Geology in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) at Oregon State University (OSU). The Yeats Professorship generates funds on an annual basis to be used to develop and maintain a cutting-edge research program in this field of study.
The position is expected to integrate field-generated data with additional information, using analytical and/or computational techniques, to understand processes and patterns of crustal deformation over earthquake-cycle and longer timescales. Potential areas of expertise include, but are not limited to, continental deformation, subduction zones, paleoseismology and paleogeodesy, and fault-zone mechanics. This position will conduct field-based interdisciplinary research that integrates geological and geophysical data with the aim of improving society's understanding of and resilience to seismic hazards.
This position is expected to demonstrate capabilities and/or high potential for research and teaching excellence that will inspire the next generation of geoscience students and early career researchers. This includes 1) creatively contributing to teaching undergraduate courses in geology and/or marine geology, as well as graduate courses in specialty, 2) building an international reputation in research in Active Tectonics and Earthquake Geology and a strong externally funded research program, and 3) contributing to on-going college- and university-wide efforts to improve diversity, equity and inclusion.
CEOAS is an internationally recognized leader in the study of the Earth as an integrated system and is home to one of the world's leading oceanography programs. It operates numerous state-of-the art laboratories, two oceanographic research vessels, and several national facilities and centers. The College has an annual research expenditure budget of more than $110 million, with support coming from the National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Department of Energy, other federal agencies, and private foundations. OSU is also one of four lead institutions on the recently funded Cascadia Region Earthquake Science Center (CRESCENT; cascadiaquakes.org), affording the successful applicant with an opportunity to interact with this 5-year initiative to study the Cascadia subduction zone and its associated hazards. OSU will also soon take ownership of a $25M NVIDIA super-computer, which will be a university-wide resource for computational research.
For academic-track positions, it is CEOAS policy to hire faculty on a 12-month, 0.75 FTE appointment (equivalent to the traditional 9-month, 1.0 FTE appointment) where additional salary can be supported by external grants up to 1.0 FTE. Consideration for indefinite tenure is coincident with evaluation for promotion to Associate Professor.
OSU and CEOAS are committed to maintaining and enhancing a collaborative and inclusive community that strives for equity, and equal opportunity. CEOAS faculty are expected to demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion, including efforts promoting equitable outcomes among learners of diverse and underrepresented identity groups (https://diversity.oregonstate.edu/strategic-plan; https://leadership.oregonstate.edu/president/initiatives/moving-forward-together). Faculty are also expected to contribute efforts to improve access to experiential learning opportunities. OSU and CEOAS strive to build and sustain a welcoming, collegial and inclusive campus environment.
CEOAS has approximately 109 faculty, 140 graduate students, and over 1300 undergraduate students. Graduate programs include M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences; Geology; Geography; and an M.S. degree in Marine Resource Management. The college offers undergraduate degrees in Geology, Oceanography, Climate Science, Geography and Geospatial Sciences, and Environmental Sciences as well as several minors and certificate programs.
