Job Summary

The Director of Life Enrichment for the Waterford at Williamsburg Assisted Living is responsible for developing and implementing an engaging program of activities and events that promote residents’ overall well-being and quality of life. This includes providing opportunities for participation in spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional, and mild physical activities.

The Director of Life Enrichment oversees all aspects of the Life Enrichment Program and ensures it reflects Waterford’s mission and values. The individual in this role must demonstrate professionalism, dependability, creativity, and a positive, collaborative attitude.

Reporting Relationships

This position reports directly to the Administrator and the Director of Healthcare.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

· Develop and maintain supportive relationships with residents, creating individualized life enrichment care plans based on their interests, needs, and abilities.

· Foster an inclusive environment that welcomes input and feedback from residents, families, and staff regarding activities and events.

· Plan, organize, and implement group outings, social gatherings, and educational or recreational activities in coordination with staff, administration, and residents.

· Ensure all activities comply with The Waterford’s policies and procedures.

· Prepare and organize activity areas before use and ensure they are cleaned and restored afterward.

· Encourage participation and engagement of all residents, consulting with the Administrator and Director of Healthcare regarding any physical or cognitive limitations.

· Purchase activity supplies as needed while adhering to the approved budget.

· Develop and maintain relationships with community partners to enhance program offerings and incorporate therapeutic, spiritual, and entertainment resources.

· Assist residents to and from activities and events as needed.

· Document all activities and record resident participation levels.

· Monitor and follow residents’ care plans, including dietary restrictions, when planning food-related activities or events.

· Coordinate with the business office for transportation scheduling when applicable.

· Serve as a van driver for off-site activities and events; ensure the van is fueled, maintained, and returned promptly. Always have at least one additional staff member on outings unless fewer than three residents attend.

· Maintain records of Resident Outing forms, monitor monthly spending limits, and submit all receipts and expenditure reports weekly to the accounting department.

· Follow The Waterford’s emergency procedures during resident incidents, document the event promptly, and notify appropriate personnel.

· Attend monthly meetings with the Administrator and/or Director of Healthcare, and additional meetings as needed.

· Collaborate regularly with other activity staff to coordinate calendars and special events.

· Perform duties in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

· Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

· High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in recreation, social work, gerontology, or a related field preferred.

· Previous experience in activity programming within healthcare, memory care, assisted living, or long-term care setting preferred.

· Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record required.

· CPR and First Aid certification preferred (or must be obtained within 30 days of hire).

· Ability to plan, organize, and lead diverse activities for a variety of resident interests and ability levels.

· Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with residents, families, and staff.

· Creativity and enthusiasm for developing engaging programs.

· Excellent organizational and time management abilities.

· Compassionate, patient, and understanding demeanor toward older adults and individuals with memory challenges.

· Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.

· Basic computer literacy and ability to maintain accurate records.

Physical Requirements

· Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and assist residents as needed.

· Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting during activities.

· Must be able to drive a company vehicle safely for resident outings and community trips.

· Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed for special events.

Work Environment

Work is performed in an assisted living environment with regular interaction with residents, families, and staff. Exposure to varying levels of activity and noise during events and programs. Occasional outdoor activities and trips may be required.
