HVAC Technician

This role leads and performs HVAC system installations at commercial sites while supervising and mentoring HVAC technicians and apprentices. You plan and assign daily and weekly tasks, oversee installation quality and commissioning, and ensure all work meets safety, cleanliness, and regulatory standards. You collaborate closely with project teams to resolve installation issues, interpret technical drawings, and track project progress, labor, and materials.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and perform HVAC system installations at commercial buildings, ensuring high-quality workmanship and timely completion.
  • Supervise, mentor, and support HVAC technicians and apprentices, providing guidance and technical direction.
  • Assign tasks and develop daily and weekly work plans to keep projects on schedule and within scope.
  • Install and commission rooftop units (RTUs), split systems, heat pumps, VRF/VRV systems, ductwork, air handlers, controls, and associated piping.
  • Troubleshoot installation issues and coordinate with project teams to implement effective solutions.
  • Ensure jobsite safety, cleanliness, and full compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and company standards.
  • Interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, and sequences of operation to execute installations accurately.
  • Track project progress, including labor hours and material usage, and communicate status to relevant stakeholders.
  • Train team members on best practices, safety procedures, and proper use of tools, equipment, and controls.
  • Perform field service tasks related to installation, start-up, and verification of thermostats, VAV systems, and building controls.
  • Work with commercial building systems, including Honeywell and other control platforms, to ensure proper operation and integration.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 5+ years of commercial HVAC installation experience, including hands-on work with RTUs, split systems, VRF/VRV systems, ductwork, and piping.
  • At least 2+ years in a leadership role preferred, with demonstrated ability to supervise and mentor technicians and apprentices.
  • Strong HVAC troubleshooting skills for mechanical, installation, service, and repair work in commercial environments.
  • Proficiency installing and commissioning rooftop units, split systems, heat pumps, VRF/VRV systems, ductwork, air handlers, and controls.
  • Ability to lead teams while also self-performing installations as needed.
  • EPA Universal Certification (required).
  • Journeyman or Master HVAC license (preferred), or a strong willingness to obtain one.
  • Strong blueprint reading skills and ability to interpret plans, wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, and sequences of events.
  • Experience with commercial building HVAC systems, including field service and installation of thermostats and VAV systems.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with project teams and communicate clearly about project status, issues, and resource needs.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with Honeywell and other building control systems.
  • Background in energy-efficient HVAC solutions and commercial building energy efficiency projects.
  • Proven ability to maintain jobsite safety, cleanliness, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience tracking labor and materials and contributing to project planning and scheduling.
  • Comfort working 8 to 10-hour days, Monday through Friday, in a field-based environment.
  • Strong mentoring and training skills to develop junior technicians and apprentices.
  • Detail-oriented approach to interpreting mechanical and electrical documentation.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development, including licensing and certifications.

Work Environment

This is a field-based role primarily serving commercial sites in the Frederick and surrounding area. Most technicians work 8 to 10 hours per day, Monday through Friday, with a focus on on-site installations, commissioning, and troubleshooting. You work with a range of HVAC technologies, including rooftop units, split systems, VRF/VRV systems, ductwork, air handlers, thermostats, VAV systems, and building controls such as Honeywell. The environment emphasizes safety, cleanliness, and adherence to regulations while supporting teamwork and collaboration on active job sites.

Job Type & Location: This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Edgewater, MD.

Pay and Benefits: The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $50.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment. Benefits are subject to change and may be subject to specific elections, plan, or program terms.
