Director of Finance - Charlotte Ballet

Founded in 1970, Charlotte Ballet is known for its strong dancers and versatile repertoire, ranging from classical ballet to bold, contemporary works. The company’s professional dancers annually present performances in Charlotte, N.C., during a season spanning from October to June.

The Company is also rebuilding our reputation as a distinct voice within the dance field through touring strategies that reach and diversify dance audiences beyond Charlotte. Charlotte Ballet Academy trains studentsannuallyand the company has nationally recognized educational and community programs. Charlotte Balletoperatesthe Patricia McBride and Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux Center for Dance in uptown Charlotte.

Director of Finance

The Director of Finance is a senior leader responsible for the overall financial health, integrity, and day-to-day financial operations of the organization. The roleowns payroll, core finance operations, financial reporting, compliance, and audit management, and serves as a key partner to leadership and HR.

Reporting Relationship

Reporting to the Executive Director, this role oversees a Manager of Accounting.

Primary Responsibilities

Payroll Ownership

• Manage end-to-end payroll processing, ensuring timely and accurate payroll for all employees including contractors and temporary workers
• Manage payroll calendar, deductions, tax withholdings, and benefits feeds
• Validate payroll audits and ensure compliance with applicable regulations
• Coordinate payroll data with HR for hires, terminations, and compensation changes

Finance Operations

• Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable processes
• Manage reconciliations and support month-end and year-end close
• Prepare budget reporting, forecasts, and actual-to-budget analyses

External Audit & Tax

• Support preparation and completion of the FY26 audit
• Own the FY27 audit process and serve as primary auditor liaison
• Manage preparation and filing of the annual IRS Form 990
• Serve as system administrator for Paycor, the payroll processing system
• Serve as system administrator for Employee Navigator (Benefit Deductions) in partnership with HR
• Manage vendor relationships including banking, IT, and corporate insurance

Controls & Compliance

• Ensure completion of required regulatory filings and reports
• Maintain strong internal controls and documentation
• Oversee compliance items such as sales taxes, retirement plans, and benefit reporting

Cross-Functional Coordination

• Partner closely with HR on employee lifecycle changes and data accuracy
• Support business channel leaders in payroll processing operations
• Partner to calculate Worker’s Compensation supplements

Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field
• Experience overseeing payroll and finance operations
• Experience managing audits and regulatory compliance

Preferred

• CPA or professional certification preferred
• Experience with Paycor and Employee Navigator or similar systems
• Experience in nonprofit and/or arts organizations is preferred

This roleoperatesin office withflexibility to work from home one day per week

Compensation Range

$100K – $120K depending on experience
