JOB PURPOSE SUMMARY

The Mechanic II is responsible for diagnosing and repairing mechanical issues on district vehicles, performing routine maintenance, and assisting with major repairs as needed. This role requires the ability to operate diagnostic tools and equipment safely, maintain accurate service records, and ensure a clean, hazard-free work environment. The position may also involve operating buses, working flexible hours, and supporting other transportation duties as assigned.

KEY FUNCTIONS, ESSENTIAL DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES

General Duties

1. Diagnose and evaluate mechanical issues in vehicles using approved diagnostic tools and equipment.

2. Perform general mechanical repairs and routine preventive maintenance on district vehicles.

3. Assist senior mechanics with major repairs and collaborative repair projects as needed.

4. Inspect vehicles to assess the condition of mechanical systems, equipment, accessories, and lighting components.

5. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of preventive maintenance, service repairs, time, and materials used.

6. Operate tools, equipment, and machinery safely and in accordance with established procedures and guidelines.

7. Adhere to all safety protocols while performing job duties, including tasks that involve lifting, climbing, and use of mechanical tools.

8. Identify and address unsafe working conditions and promptly report any hazards that cannot be immediately corrected to a supervisor.

9. Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment, including tools, equipment, and the maintenance shop area.

10. Provide and maintain personal hand tools and toolbox as required for daily job functions.

11. Operate buses and other district vehicles when necessary, including serving as a Cover Driver when needed.

12. Be available to work flexible or irregular hours, including evenings and weekends as required.

13. Perform other duties as assigned by the Mechanic Coordinator, Assistant Director of Fleet Services, or the Director of Transportation.

Compliance

14. Performs all duties in accordance with standard procedures and protocols established by the Transportation Department and the District, and as set forth by governing entities and regulatory requirements including, but not limited to, Texas Education Code, Texas Administrative Code, Texas Transportation Code, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Health & Safety Code, Texas Accessibility Standards, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR).

15. Demonstrates and maintains proficient working knowledge and understanding of compliance requirements and standards including, but not limited to, student transportation safety, workplace safety, personal protective equipment (PPE) use, safe operation of bus equipment, emergency evacuation procedures, as well as other related requirements as they pertain to the job function.

General

16. Ensure all vehicle inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities are performed in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations, including Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and Department of Transportation (DOT) standards.

17. Adheres to all other District wide policies and procedures including, but not limited to, human resources, safety, and emergency protocols.

19. Displays integrity, responsibility, accountability, teamwork, and ethics.

20. Assists department leadership in the compilation of miscellaneous confidential reports, as requested.

21. Attends departmental and organizational meetings, as required.

23. Performs assigned job duties and responsibilities in accordance with established performance expectations, as well as with District policies, procedures, protocols and standard practices.

24. Demonstrates basic working knowledge and understanding of software systems and applications pertaining to student transportation management, incident reporting, GPS, training and compliance, communication, and other programs relevant to the job function.

25. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

• High school diploma or equivalent GED
• Active, Valid, and In Good Standing Texas Commercial Driver's License with Class B, (P) Passenger and (S) School Bus Endorsements
• Active, Valid, and In Good Standing school bus safety education certification

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS

This position requires the ability to work primarily outdoors or in a vehicle maintenance facility, exposed to varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain). Physically demanding work involving standing for long periods, bending, lifting heavy parts or equipment (often 50+ lbs), and using ladders or tools. May require exposure to vehicle fluids, cleaning chemicals, and mechanical parts, requiring use of personal protective equipment (PPE) like gloves, safety glasses, and hearing protection. This is a noisy, fast-paced environment, working around operating buses and machinery. May be required to work early mornings, evenings, or weekends, including after-hour road calls or during emergency situations. Frequent district travel and occasional statewide travel. This position also includes regular interaction with drivers, mechanics, and supervisors, requiring clear communication and attention to detail. Tasks include reading, seeing, speaking, hearing, listening, organizing, interpreting data and information, typing using a computer keyboard and mouse, viewing a computer monitor for extended periods, and occasional use of a telephone. Periodic operation of a motor vehicle on public roadways to and from various trouble shooting locations may be required.
