This professional uses acquired knowledge, theory, research and experience to respond to changes in clinical situations. The role applies the Synergy Model for Care in practice and uses this knowledge to personalize care for each patient/family while serving as a resource to colleagues and a strong advocate for them. Responsibilities Provides administrative and clinical supervision to nursing personnel on all shifts, 24/7 within their operating unit. Assesses the overall status of the hospital and plans a course of action for the current shift and the next shift. Coordinates nursing activities with other hospital departments. Provides input into goals and objectives of nursing services. Meets with staff to discuss progress and develop future courses of action. Clarifies and interprets hospital and nursing policies and procedures to nursing staff, physicians, patients, visitors, and personnel in various hospital departments. Maintains current manuals on hospital policies and procedures; ensures they are readily available. Assists the Charge Nurse in determining required staff based on patient census and acuity. Assists in reviewing and adjusting patient assignments when staffing is limited; reallocates staff to meet changing patient care needs. Assigns float personnel to areas of greatest acuity. Records staffing changes on required forms and schedules. Initiates disciplinary processes, as appropriate, during shift. Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs, activities, and procedures to ensure high-quality patient care outcomes. Reports and investigates significant events with potential legal implications to the appropriate management. Meets with families, patients and staff to resolve concerns or difficult situations. Provides appropriate procedural information to patients/families requesting living wills, designated power of attorney or donation of anatomical gifts. Provides support and direction in resolving challenges, assists non-nursing operations with personnel needs, and escalates to leadership as needed. Coordinates care in emergency situations in non-patient care areas. Initiates nursing rounds to monitor changes in patient acuity and unit status. Prepares written documentation of bed placement, patient acceptance, and intervening factors. Supports documentation of incident reports and patient codes. Furnishes written and verbal reports to oncoming supervisory personnel. Posts and reports changes in the operating room schedule. Facilitates placement of patients on admission, transfer and discharge. Reviews daily shift staffing reports for patient census and acuity. Develops plans for arrivals requiring telemetry or intensive care placement. Coordinates the opening or closing of patient care areas. Reports significant patient information, staff performance, and unit activities to the appropriate AOC or Executive Backup. Responds to patient codes and coordinates notification of resource personnel. Provides crisis intervention as needed. Coordinates direction and physical assistance of all staff involved in heliport operations. Notifies personnel when a disaster plan is initiated and provides direction. Procures emergency medication, equipment, supplies, and services when urgent situations require them. Reports newsworthy items to appropriate management and public relations that may impact the hospital. Assists nursing staff in priority setting, organizing care, and developing leadership skills. Counsels the Charge Nurse regarding difficult or unusual patient/employee situations and assists in determining possible courses of action. Serves as a resource person for new staff and orients staff to the Charge Nurse role. Identifies staff and patient educational needs based on clinical situations. Assists in developing, conducting and evaluating staff in-services, using bedside situations to teach staff. Provides instruction to staff on nursing research principles; assists in implementing and evaluating practice changes based on research. May contribute to the core of nursing knowledge through publication and formal presentations. Factors affecting environment conditions may vary by work area and task; typical exposures include blood-borne pathogens, bio-hazardous waste, chemicals, pathogens, electrical hazards, and more. Use of personal protective equipment as required. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Bachelor’s degree required. Valid, active unencumbered Nursing license or temporary permit approved by the Georgia Licensing Board. Five years of Registered Nursing experience, with at least two years in a supervisory or managerial capacity. BLS and Healthcare Provider certifications required.
