Auditions for New Line Theatre’s HAIR

New Line Theatre will hold an open audition on Monday night, October 12, 2026, for the American Tribal Love-Rock MusicalHAIR, running four weekends in June 2027. Scott Miller and Chris Moore will direct the show. For more information, go to New Line is always looking for casts that are diverse in terms of race, body type, age, etc., people who are intelligent, fun, fearless, singing actors. We are very eager to cast actors of color, and we are open to cross-gender casting. We do not cast anyone under 17. Auditions will be held by appointment on October 12 at the Marcelle Theater, 3310 Samuel Shepard Drive (63103), just three blocks east of Grand in the Grand Center Arts District. Performers should prepare a contemporary theatre song, in rock or pop style (no R&H, please), with printed piano music for our pianist (no karaoke tracks and no a cappella). We do not accept video auditions. Performers may be asked to sing from the score. New Line is a non-union professional theatre company. Performers will share a guaranteed 10% of box office receipts, with a minimum of $100 per actor for the run. THE SHOW

HAIRwill run twelve performances over four weeks at the Marcelle Theatre, June 3-26, 2027. All roles are open. You can find the character breakdowns and vocal ranges here. The following roles have been cast: Jeanine Sheila Crissy Hud We are tentatively considering our two male leads, Berger and Claude, swapping roles each weekend. This decision will be made when we cast those roles. We did this with Jesus Christ Superstar in 2006 and it worked really well. A Note About the Nudity: New Line’s production of HAIR will include the show’s traditional nude scene. It’s a single 10-15-second moment of dimly lit nudity at the end of the first act, under the final chord at the end of “Where Do I Go?” when the tribe sings “Freedom!” As it was in the original production, the nudity is TOTALLY OPTIONAL, full, partial, or not at all. To be clear, this moment is not at all meant to be sexy or erotic; it’s meant to communicate and embody freedom and escape from the unthinking rules of mainstream society. It connects directly to a foundational idea to the hippies – our bodies are not dirty or shameful; instead they should be celebrated.

REHEARSALS

New Line rehearses on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m., plus every night the week the show opens. Most rehearsals are at Wydown United Church, in Clayton. For some shows, there are also dance rehearsals on Sunday nights at the Saint Louis Dance Theatre studio on Washington, around the block from the Marcelle.
