Job Overview Job Title: Checker Department: Grocery FLSA: Non‑Exempt General Function: As a cashier you’ll be part of a growing innovative brand that prides itself on providing best in class customer service. The cashier provides fast and friendly service to customers, assists them with questions and requests, operates a cash register, packages product, works with drive‑up and/or carry‑out, and replenishes product as needed. Positions that report to you: None. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Provide prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience. Smile and greet customers, learn their names, address them by name whenever possible. Escort customers to products, secure items that are out of reach, load or unload heavy items, note and pass along customer suggestions or requests, and perform other tasks to enhance the shopping experience. Answer the telephone promptly and provide friendly, helpful service. Work with co‑workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment. Operate cash register accurately, scan products, redeem promotional coupons, food stamps, WIC checks, issue rain checks, receive cash, checks, and complete credit‑card charge transactions, in‑store charges and calculate discounts, count back change and issue receipts. Place merchandise in bags or boxes, give packages to customers, assist courtesy personnel as needed. Answer customer questions and concerns and follow up with appropriate personnel. Understand and follow local, state, and company policies on sales of tobacco, liquor and lottery tickets and on WIC and food stamps. Know value, lookup numbers, department numbers and features of items for which money is received. Stock, face, rotate merchandise, clean shelves, understand shelf tags, know location of merchandise in the store and in the back room, and take customers to an item when requested. Communicate clearly and distinctly on the intercom or telephone system. Review weekly store ad to note price changes and sale items. Keep register area clean, ensure adequate supplies, report improper cash levels and help maintain store appearance. Compare totals on cash register with amount of currency to verify balances at the beginning and end of shift. Give cash refunds or issue credit memorandums to customers for returned merchandise; know where to direct the customer. Practice proper sanitation procedures and ensure the work area is always clean and neat. Adhere to company policies and individual store guidelines, report to work when scheduled and on time. Secondary Duties and Responsibilities Assist store management as required (e.g., store displays, decorations for special promotion/events). Explain code dates on perishable items to customers. Change register tape and ribbons as necessary. Assist in other areas of store as needed. Perform other job related duties and special projects as required. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics Carry out detailed written or verbal instructions; deal with a few concrete variables. Perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals and percentages. Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated instructions; write identifying information; request supplies verbally or in writing. Physical Requirements Must be physically able to exert up to 50 pounds of force frequently and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects. (Can be accommodated) Requires vision from less than 20 inches to more than 20 feet with or without correction, depth perception, color vision and field of vision. Working Conditions This position is frequently exposed to temperature extremes and possible dampness. Possible equipment movement hazards from a pallet jack, electrical shock and exposure to chemicals and solvents. Fast‑paced work environment.
