The RN provides care to these patients through the utilization of the nursing process and nursing trends. The RN maintains up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided. The RN completes the initial assessment upon patient admission and develops an appropriate plan of care. The plan of care is developed in accordance with unit standards based on patient and family needs. The RN implements the plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures. The RN modifies the plan of care based upon continuous evaluation. The RN takes responsibility for patient and employee safety. The RN communicates with others directly and in private when necessary to resolve issues. The RN offers constructive feedback to assist in the professional development of peers. The RN confers with colleagues to expand knowledge. The RN identifies own learning needs and takes initiative to address them. The RN fulfills all requirements of departmental competencies. The RN assesses orthopedic and medical/surgical patients every shift. The RN educates patients on wound care, proper mobility, self-care, medication management, and care transition needs. The RN coordinates with physician partners on the care of orthopedic and medical/surgical patients. The RN delegates and monitors interventions of the healthcare team staff. The RN sets up orthopedic traction and manipulates surgical traction devices for mobility and wound care. The RN manages wound appliances such as wound vacs, drains, and other devices.
