Life Sciences - Human Pharma Sub-Market Industry Leader

DescriptionBurns & McDonnell is seeking an accomplished Human Pharma Life Sciences Industry Leader to drive the strategic growth of its national pharmaceutical and life sciences business. This individual will expand the firm’s design-build and EPC presence by developing key client relationships, identifying and securing new business opportunities, building technical and project delivery capabilities, and providing leadership across the project lifecycle—from early development through execution.Working closely with the Business Line Leader and Consumer and Life Sciences (CLS) leadership, this role combines market leadership, deep industry expertise, and oversight of project execution to support long-term growth, profitability, and client success while upholding Burns & McDonnell’s core values of safety, quality, integrity, and service.Specific areas of responsibility include the following:Market and Business Development:This responsibility would require the leader to work closely with the Business Development, Process Technology Managers and Account Managers.Develop and execute a long-term strategic growth plan for the Human Pharma Life Sciences business, aligned with national practice priorities.Identify and pursue key clients, market segments, and geographic opportunities to expand market presence and revenue.Build and maintain executive-level relationships with clients across technical, operational, and capital project functions.Lead early identification of project opportunities and support go/no-go decisions in coordination with leadership.Drive capture strategy, proposal development, presentations, interviews, and contract negotiations for major pursuits.Generate new business and expand existing client accounts through trusted relationships and value-driven solutions.Leverage internal capabilities across Global Practices and Regional Offices to maximize client impact and pursue success.Represent the firm at industry conferences, technical forums, and client events, strengthening market visibility and reputation.Enhance the organization's reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests, exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.Manage new, non-traditional and compelling solutions to a customer's stated project scope of work to differentiate between Burns & McDonnell.Identify synergies internal to the Burns & McDonnell organization in other Global Practices and Regional Offices. Develop relationships to leverage one another's skills, abilities, and client contacts to further the marketing effort in GFS.Lead in recruitment, development, training and retention of Employee-OwnersLife Sciences - Pharma Technical and Process Engineering LeadershipThis responsibility would require the leader to work closely with the Operations Director, Process Technology Managers and the Engineering Team.Lead client and project-team relationships to ensure the process design basis is technically sound and aligned with the client’s project objectives.Plan, organize, and direct feasibility studies, technology evaluations, master-planning activities, and conceptual designs required to support client projects and strategic initiatives.Guide the evaluation, selection, and integration of pharmaceutical manufacturing technologies, process systems, and facility concepts.Develop innovative, differentiated solutions that address client challenges and strengthen competitive positioning.Maintain current knowledge of market trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory developments, and provide periodic insights to division leadership in support of strategic, marketing, and sales initiatives.Ensure technical solutions align with industry’s best practices, applicable regulatory requirements, current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), and client business objectives.Represent Burns & McDonnell at industry conferences, technical seminars, professional organizations, committees, and client events through presentations, technical papers, panel participation, and other thought-leadership activities.Mentor project staff by providing guidance, instruction, and expert-level technical advice.Lead and support technical design reviews for assigned projects, evaluating the feasibility, completeness, and technical soundness of proposed plans and solutions.Project Management LeadershipThis responsibility would require the leader to work closely with the Project Director and the Project Management Organization.Provide executive leadership for multidisciplinary EPC and design-build projects during front-end planning, feasibility, conceptual design, and early project execution.Oversee the integration of engineering, procurement, construction, project controls, safety, quality, regulatory compliance, and stakeholder engagement.Serve as the senior client interface and oversee project communications related to scope, budget, schedule, staffing, performance, and key decisions.Lead the development and implementation of project execution plans, scopes of work, estimates, schedules, budgets, contracting strategies, and change-management practices.Direct and coordinate multidisciplinary assignments to ensure the efficient and cost-effective utilization of staff.Support project management teams in developing requests for proposal (RFPs), evaluating bids, selecting contractors and suppliers, and achieving technical and commercial alignment.Meet regularly with Project Managers for assigned projects and accounts to review project metrics and oversee profitability, financial performance, scope, schedule, cost, risk, quality, staffing, and client satisfaction.Support quality reviews during pursuits and project execution, ensuring compliance with Burns & McDonnell’s Quality Control program and established project management standards, procedures, and tools.Review and approve reports for assigned projects, including cost forecasts, accruals, schedule updates, risk assessments, and performance information provided to clients and Global Practice leadership.Identify performance deficiencies and resolve technical, commercial, contractual, and execution challenges by coordinating timely corrective actions with clients and project teams.Champion Burns & McDonnell’s safety culture and ensure compliance with company and project-site safety requirements for employees, subconsultants, contractors, and other engineering or related degree from an accredited program and 13 years relevant consulting experience, preferably in transmission engineering design and/or project management, consulting, or program management.Expert knowledge of project management methodologies and tools including the use of Microsoft Project or equivalent.Expert experience in client and business development.Expert experience in project management including planning, design team coordination and communication, budgeting, schedule management, and client coordination.Expert experience in contract negotiations.Excellent facilitation, collaboration, organization, and problem solving skills.Demonstrated financial success on completed projects.Ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead and manage.Excellent planning and analytical skills.Excellent oral and written communication skills, and able to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.Excellent interpersonal skills.Preferred:Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution; master’s degree preferred.Minimum of 20 years of progressively responsible experience in the Life Sciences – Human Pharma industry, including managing large-scale capital projects and leading multidisciplinary, cross-functional teams.Demonstrated experience leading front-end planning, feasibility studies, conceptual design, and EPC project delivery for pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities.Strong knowledge of pharmaceutical manufacturing processes, facility design, process technologies, and cGMP-regulated environments.Proven project leadership experience, including developing and managing project scopes, execution plans, schedules, budgets, risks, quality, and financial performance.Demonstrated success developing new business, executing market-growth strategies, expanding existing accounts, and building long-term client relationships.Established network within the Life Sciences – Human Pharma industry, including clients, consultants, technology and equipment suppliers, and contractors.Experience with design-build and EPC delivery models, proposal development, commercial strategy, and contract negotiation.Proven ability to lead, develop, mentor, and retain high-performing technical and project-delivery teams.Ability to build trusted relationships with internal and external stakeholders and collaborate effectively across business lines, disciplines, Regional Offices, and national practice.Strong executive presence and excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation, facilitation, collaboration, and negotiation skills, with the ability to clearly convey complex technical and commercial information to clients, project teams, management, and senior leadership.Strong strategic thinking, business acumen, organizational ability, analytical judgment, and problem-solving skills, with a
