Job Description - Position SummaryThe General Dentist – Hospital Dentistry provides comprehensive dental care for medically complex, special needs, and hospitalized patients within an academic healthcare environment. The position supports the mission of patient care, education, research, and community service through clinical practice, resident education, interdisciplinary collaboration, and participation in departmental and institutional initiatives.This role serves patients in both outpatient and hospital-based settings, including operating room dentistry, inpatient consultations, emergency dental care, and treatment of patients requiring advanced medical management. The dentist works closely with physicians, surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and allied health professionals to ensure safe, high-quality oral healthcare delivery.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Clinical Care
    • Provide comprehensive diagnostic, preventive, restorative, and surgical dental services.
    • Evaluate and treat medically complex patients, including those with significant systemic diseases.
    • Deliver hospital-based dentistry services in operating room and ambulatory surgical settings.
    • Perform dental treatment under general anesthesia and sedation when indicated.
    • Provide inpatient and emergency department dental consultations.
    • Manage dental infections, oral pain, trauma, and urgent dental conditions.
    • Develop and implement treatment plans for patients with special healthcare needs.
    • Coordinate care with medical and surgical teams to support overall patient health outcomes.
    • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in the electronic medical record.
  • Hospital Dentistry Services
    • Participate in operating room scheduling and surgical case management.
    • Perform comprehensive dental rehabilitation procedures under anesthesia.
    • Provide pre-operative dental clearance evaluations for patients undergoing medical procedures.
    • Assist with management of oral manifestations of systemic disease.
    • Collaborate with oncology, cardiology, transplant, trauma, and other specialty services as appropriate.
    • Participate in hospital call coverage and emergency consultation services as assigned.
  • Teaching and Academic Responsibilities
    • Educate and mentor dental residents, medical residents, and students in clinical and hospital settings.
    • Provide clinical supervision and instruction during patient care activities.
    • Participate in residency didactic programs, seminars, and case presentations.
    • Support curriculum development and educational initiatives.
    • Serve as a role model for professionalism, patient-centered care, and evidence-based practice.
  • Research and Scholarly Activity
    • Participate in quality improvement, clinical research, and scholarly activities.
    • Present findings at departmental, institutional, regional, or national meetings when appropriate.
    • Contribute to academic publications and educational materials.
    • Support evidence-based dentistry initiatives throughout the department.
  • Administrative and Service Responsibilities
    • Participate actively in departmental meetings, committees, and strategic initiatives.
    • Assist in developing clinical protocols, policies, and quality improvement programs.
    • Support accreditation, compliance, infection prevention, and patient safety efforts.
    • Engage in community outreach and public education activities.
    • Contribute to departmental growth, patient access, and service line development.

Faculty appointment through the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine will be commensurate with qualifications, experience, and academic achievements.

Qualifications Must be able to perform all essential job duties as outlined in the job description. Required Qualifications

Education - DDSorDMDdegree from an accredited dental school.

Experience - Completion of a General Practice Residency (GPR), Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD), or equivalent hospital-based training.Eligible for unrestricted dental licensure in the State of West Virginia.Eligible for hospital privileges within Marshall Health Network.DEAregistration and applicable controlled substance permits.Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Preferred Qualifications

Education

Experience - Experience treating medically complex or special needs patients.Experience providing care in operating room settings.Advanced training in hospital dentistry, sedation, or special care dentistry.Academic teaching experience.Interest in clinical research and scholarly activity.
