The Resource Pool provides ad hoc staffing solutions for special needs or disruptions in the hospital’s workforce, such as in the case of vacancies, call-offs, and surges in patient census. Resource staff float to all areas of the hospital (including Med-Surg, ICU, PACU, and Emergency Department); Resource staff also opens and staffs overflow units during high census, so a high level of autonomy and self-direction is required. To work in the Resource Pool, you must be especially flexible, knowledgeable, and responsive!

What can you Expect as a Patient Care Technician?

The Patient Care Technician provides patient care including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living and assists with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies. They provide feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status.

The Patient Care Technician performs the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections and Foley care) and at least four of the following BU identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal. They also must routinely perform the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities including ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning and repositioning patients as well as point of care testing (inc. blood glucose), weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, HAC & PSI prevention (TEDs/SCDs). In addition, they may also apply simple dressings, placement, and removal of restraints, 12 lead EKG, bladder scan, all specimen collections. All competencies must be achieved.

Shifts/Hours: 

This role will work rotating 7am to 7pm and 7pm to 7am shifts. *Hours are subject to change based on business needs.
