About This Role Department Emergency Services Reports to Type Requisition # 12728 Position Summary The Clinical RN is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibilities and accounts for a group of patients for a designated time frame and provides therapeutic and safe care to patients using the nursing process of individualized patient/client assessment, outcomes identification planning, implementation/intervention and evaluation. The RN is responsible and accountable for nursing care delivered to their assigned patients by LVNs, HAs and others. Professional duties include patient teaching, staff development, delegation, supervision, coordination, and patient advocacy. The RN will demonstrate competency and commitment in achieving organizational and Essential Duties and Responsibilities Complies with CHA Compliance Handbook including Code of Ethics and all Statues, regulations and guidelines applicable to federal and state programs. Responsibilities include, following the guidelines and reporting suspected violations of any statue, regulations, agreements or guidelines applicable to all healthcare programs. Practices Chinese Hospital service philosophy standards in all aspects of job performance and promotes professional, positive, supportive work relationships with all members of the hospital workforce. Demonstrates positive behavior and the ability to perform ongoing clinical assessment of the patient, establishes and implements a plan of care and evaluates the outcome of that care, utilizing the nursing practice process that is specific of the patient. Demonstrates the personal responsibility to deliver high quality patient care, which is founded upon established nursing standards and practice, emphasizing education, practice skills and clinical competence. Responsible for delegating the delivery of care to others as well as motivating staff to deliver and maintain care that best demonstrates the mission, vision and values of Chinese Hospital through professional excellence with personal concern. Maintains Chinese Hospital’s attendance and punctuality standards in a consistent and regular manner. Promotes and maintains a safe working environment and ensures safe conduct in all aspects of job performance. Formulates a plan of care based on assessment and information obtained from patient, family and other health team members. Reviews and revises discharge goals and care plans daily. Delivers care as outlined in plan of care in accordance to Policy and Procedures, Standards of Care and the Registered Nurse Practice Act, Blood borne Pathogens/Infection Control Standard and other professional standards. Communicates and accurately documents all nursing care delivered on the patient’s medical record. Administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance to approved nursing standards and protocols. Assesses, plans, teaches and provides the patient/family the necessary knowledge and skills to better address their knowledge deficits. Involved in the PI activities on the nursing unit. Provides general nursing care, which address the personal, hygienic, comfort and safety needs of the patient. Takes vital signs and completes other assessments as needed. Serves/collects food trays and assists in the feeding of patients. Greets and directs all visitors. Answers calls light and telephone promptly and professionally. Assists in the preparation of the unit, room, bed for admissions and completes or reviews admission assessment. Assists in preparation for discharge and/or provides post-mortem care. Must be proficient in the operation of the following: computer keyboard, patient call system, telephone copier, fax machine and addressograph. Must be proficient in the operation of the equipment used in the unit in which the nurse is assigned to work. Follows Hospital and Department policies and procedures at all times, including but not limited to: Administrative Manual, Environment of Care, Human Resources, Infection Control, Corporate Compliance, Code of Ethics, etc. Attends, actively participates and completes in-services, training classes, mandatory classes, seminars/workshops, staff meetings, exercises and drills; reads all department communication and assigned materials. Customer Service – Provides excellent customer service and shows compassion to all patients, visitors and co-workers. Seeks feedback to ensure all needs are met. Anticipates and recognizes the concerns of others, even if those concerns are not openly expressed. Communication – Keeps manager and team informed of progress, problems, development and plans. Gets along and interacts positively with co-workers and others. Accepts and performs other duties as assigned. Evaluates effectiveness of self, care given by all health care team members and contribution of systems, environment an instrumentation in progressing patients toward desired outcomes. Technical skills Demonstrates competency in selected psychomotor skills. Identifies learning needs, barriers to learning and implements measures appropriate to patient’s age and developmental stage. Documentation Document in patient record which is timely, accurate, concise and according to documentation standards. Patient/SO rights Demonstrates awareness/sensitivity and confidentiality to patients/SO rights as identified in the organization. Also considers cultural/sexual/spiritual preferences. Safety Functions with an awareness and application of safety issues as identified by the hospital/department of nursing structure standards. Completes patient care in a safe and cost effective manner. Emergency Situation Performs efficiently in emergency patient situation following establish protocols, remaining calm, informing appropriate persons and documenting events. Knowledge base Demonstrates applied knowledge base in areas of Structure Standards, patient care resources/references, protocols, pertinent drugs, standards of care and significant laboratory values. Professionalism Demonstrates an awareness of self respect and accountable for own professional service. Attends the mandatory in-services offered. Comply timely with licensure and annual competency requirement. Teaching others Participates actively in staff development/preceptor ship activities for unit and Department of Nursing. Self-development Demonstrates self directed learning and participates in CE to meet own professional development. Self validates Seeks validity of knowledge base, skill level and decision making as necessary and assertively seeks guidance in areas of question. Delegates/Coordinate/Organize Demonstrates appropriate delegation of tasks/duties in the direction and coordination of health care team members, patient care/unit activities, using appropriate organized priority-setting skills. Staffing Remains flexible and co-operative with 24 hours staffing patterns, scheduling needs for provision of care and participates in temporary assignment measures to all Department of Nursing. Qualifications Required Currently licensed in the State of California to practice as a Registered Nurse. Six (6) months previous experience in Medical-Surgical (M/S) nursing preferred. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Certification. Able to speak, write and understand English. Bilingual Cantonese-speaking preferred. Familiarity with computer keyboard. Specific Qualification for Specialty Units Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certificate required for ICU, Emergency department, Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Same Day Surgery Unit (SDSU) and Endoscopy Suite (ENDO). CCRN recommended for ICU. Current Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) certification required for core Outpatient Medical Therapy Center (OMTC) staff. Must be able to assess and care for the special needs and behavior of specific age population: Medical/Surgical (M/S), Telemetry Units and ICU – Adolescent to frail elderly. Surgical Suite/PACU – Adolescent to frail elderly. SDSU/ENDO Suite/OMTC – 13 years to frail elderly. Emergency Department – Birth to elderly. Physical Requirements Prolonged standing Frequent bending, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching and lifting up to or > 100 pounds with assistance/equipment. The ability to walk up and down stairs Ability to move about quickly and adjust to short notice changes – emergency, unusual or routine Must be proficient in the use of medical and office equipment Ability to assist and/or perform procedures including those requiring strenuous manipulation. Verbal: Must be able to articulate and be understood in interactions with patients, visitors and staff. Must be able to convey spoken instructions accurately, quickly and loudly if necessary. Auditory: Must be able to hear in interactions with patients, visitors and staff without using loud volumes. Must be able to hear and differentiate telephone, patient call system, equipment/telemetry alarms, overhead pages. Must be able to comprehend language without the use of lip-reading. Visual: Must be able to see with clarity at a distance of 20 inches, patient documents, computer and equipment panels, cardiac monitors and to adequately assess patient’s condition, i.e. respiratory status, skin color, skin breakdown, etc. Must be able to see with clarity at a distance of 20 feet to aid in transporting and maneuvering beds, gurneys and wheelchairs. Must be able to assess patient’s needs, greet visitors and direct emergency personnel adequately. Must have the ability to focus, judge distances, distinguish colors and possess good peripheral vision. Tactile/Smelling: Must be able to palpate and differentiate abnormalities such as bumps, lumps, swelling when performing assessment. Sense of smell for monitoring presence or absence of body fluids or fire. Ability to handle specialized surgical/medical instruments. Must pass pre-employment physical and an annual or periodic physical exam and meet departmental standards within required timeframes. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Temperature varied environment, fast pace, frequent interruptions and ongoing collaboration with health care team members, patient/family and/or representatives. Rare exposure to outside conditions such as rain, hail, extreme heat, cold, or humidity will occur if discharging a patient to a vehicle. Moderate noise level exists especially during day shift hours. Hospital beds and patient equipment may provide an increased risk for the potential of electrical shock. Radiation exposure may occur occasionally due to the use of portable x-ray machines. Rare exposure to toxic chemicals may occur due to certain medications, solutions and cleaning agents used in a hospital setting. Risk for explosions due to the presence of pressurized hospital gases such as oxygen. Known hazards – Occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM). Compliance Requirements Complies with Chinese Hospital Compliance Handbook including Code of Ethics and all statutes, regulations, guidelines applicable to federal and state programs. Base Pay Scale Starting at $60.07 – $89.18 per hour. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
