OFFICE LOCATION 1015 15th Street, NW Suite 1200, Washington, DC WORK SCHEDULE Hybrid/Flexible SALARY $155,000 – $170,000 Position Description The Vice President, Development and Philanthropy leads the strategy for securing, maintaining, and growing philanthropic funding. The role includes developing and implementing fundraising plans across multiple channels, managing donor relationships, and achieving revenue goals. The Vice President reports to the CEO and partners with executive leadership, Marketing & Communications, and Community Impact & Engagement teams. Key Responsibilities Develop and implement a comprehensive, sustainable fundraising plan that retains existing donors and generates new revenue. Lead and support all facets of individual, foundation, and corporate support, planned giving, and other fundraising activities linked to the organization’s vision. Sustain relationships across the organization to align the Resource Development department with the overall strategic plan. Collaborate with Marketing & Communications to develop effective donor engagement and communication strategies. Ensure best practices in donor stewardship, solicitation, and data management, including accurate CRM use. Work with area foundations and funders to support large‑scale change in the Greater Washington, DC area. Anticipate changes in the fundraising environment to seize opportunities and mitigate philanthropic trends. Collaborate and liaise with the Board of Directors to identify and promote funding opportunities to donors and partners. Lead the Resource Development Committee of the Board of Directors. Meet or exceed all established quarterly and annual revenue objectives. Revenue Generation Generate a strategic plan that establishes fundraising targets, crafts donor engagement strategies, and aligns fundraising initiatives with organizational goals. Lead and monitor the Resource Development team’s goals to maximize philanthropic revenue streams, including annual campaigns, workplace campaigns, corporate giving, major donations, and non‑traditional revenue streams. Secure support from individual contributors at all levels, including major gifts and leadership gifts. Secure corporate support through corporate/foundation giving, sponsorship, and consumer engagement efforts. Cultivate new funding sources and manage a robust donor portfolio of transformational and principal gifts. Provide staff donor portfolio support with a focus on growing individual giving. Collaborate with the Executive Leadership Team on revenue stream innovation under the new three‑year strategic plan. Leadership Build and manage a Resource Development team of eight members, including Director of Corporate Partnerships, Major Gifts Officer, and Individual Giving Officer, and align the team’s objectives and structure with revenue and performance goals. Set department, corporate, and personal goals in support of United Way NCA’s vision and community impact goals. Provide ongoing leadership and support to the Resource Development team, identifying future leaders and encouraging professional growth. Ensure the team has the necessary skills, tools, resources, and training to succeed. Develop, monitor, and manage departmental expense budgets within financial plan constraints. Develop and monitor United Way NCA’s revenue goals and budgets with key managers to meet and exceed organizational and community goals. Support team members in collaboration with other departments to foster professional development and cross‑organizational collaboration. Gather data, research, and analysis for goal setting and projections; prepare progress reports as assigned. Establish performance measures, monitor results, and evaluate fundraising program efficacy. Develop and implement solicitation strategies including prospect identification, cultivation, proposal writing, and stewardship. Maintain fundraising and operational policies and procedures. Represent United Way NCA in the community and during crisis response efforts as required. Represent United Way NCA during occasional nights and weekends. Qualifications and Personal Attributes Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred in a related field or experience equivalent. Minimum ten (10) years of related experience with heavy emphasis on mid‑level and major gifts, grants, capital campaigns, and diversifying revenue. Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive (ACFRE) or Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) certification preferred. Self‑motivated, goal‑driven, and able to work independently. Five years of direct executive‑level experience managing a development department and fostering cross‑functional relationships. Proven work experience in a fundraising environment and comprehensive knowledge of fundraising science. Experience working with volunteers and knowledge of United Way operations. Excellent strategic thinking, problem‑solving skills, and attention to detail. Achievement oriented with initiative, courage, and self‑confidence. Proven experience dealing with all levels of leadership, corporate, foundation executives, and high‑capacity donors. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Proven track record of raising a minimum of $10M and achieving revenue goals. Proficient with Microsoft software and using a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) database.
