Keyboard Specialist This position involves responsibility for the performance of standardized clerical tasks and the full-time or substantial part-time operation of equipment requiring the manipulating of an alphanumeric keyboard to produce printed copy. Specific duties vary with the needs of the department. Supervisors are available for consultation concerning new or difficult assignments. Work is reviewed by immediate observation, checking completed work, periodic or spot checks, cross-checking or other steps in the clerical process. Supervision over the work of others is not a responsibility of employees in this class. A Keyboard Specialist does related work as required. Typical work activities include receiving and organizing work to be typed determining document format; typing correspondence, documents, records and other written material in final or draft form using handwritten, rough drafts, marked copy, oral recordings or data from various equipment as the source material; proofreading and correcting work producing accurate, clean and complete typed copy; making arithmetical computations, compiling and typing simple statistical reports; preparing, storing and retrieving lists and documents; answering telephone and giving out routine information or relieving at switchboard; updating and storing department forms on word processor; ordering office supplies and maintaining inventory of supplies and equipment; sorting, date stamping and distributing mail and packages; performing routine equipment maintenance tasks; serving as receptionist and greeting clients and/or visitors; maintaining alphabetic, numeric and/or chronological files of correspondence, documents and materials by coding and filing new material, searching for requested material and periodically purging obsolete material; scheduling meetings and appointments; collecting fees and accounting for monies received; and preparing and maintaining time records and payroll data. Minimum starting salary is $33,660 per year. Job qualifications must meet competitive Civil Service requirements and be on the current Keyboard Specialist Eligible Civil Service list from Cattaraugus County. Minimum qualifications include graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma or one year of clerical office experience and either successful completion of a course involving the use of personal computers; three months experience in a clerical position which regularly required a candidate to utilize word processing or personal computer equipment to produce printed copy; or knowledge of personal computer equipment, operations and functions. Special requirement for appointment in school districts/BOCES: Per regulations of the Commissioner of Education, to be employed in a position designated by a school district or BOCES as involving direct contact with students, a clearance for employment from the State Education Department is required.
