You will serve as an INTERDISCIPLINARY SUPERVISORY NUCLEAR ENGINEER or SUPERVISORY HEALTH PHYSICIST in the Operations Branch (105.62), Radiological Emergency Planning Division (105.6) of the Manager, Radiological Control Support (105.1S), Radiological Control Office (105) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties
Help
- You will serve as the supervisor, advisor, and staff assistant to the Division Head of the Radiological Emergency Planning Division.
- You will assign and coordinate work in the interest of the overall objectives, ensuring timely completion and quality of assigned work.
- You will schedule and approve leave, rate performance and make decisions or recommendations for discipline, promotions, awards, and training.
- You will coordinate response to naval nuclear reactor incidents or radiological emergencies which includes the development, preparation, and maintenance of procedures for notification of appropriate emergency personnel and radiological conditions.
- You will collaborate with Federal, State , and Local government agencies to ensure Shipyard response plans, combined with plans from these agencies, provide complete and integrated coverage of necessary emergency response actions.
- You will maintain and upgrade radiological emergency support facilities, such as mobile response vans, communication/notification systems, and radiological assessment equipment.

- You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
- You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
- Supervisors in the executive branch have a heightened personal responsibility for advancing government ethics. You will be required to review the 14 General Principles of Ethical Conduct at 5 CFR 2635.101.
- You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
- You will be required to climb ladders and scaffolding.
- You will be required to lift/carry up to 50 pounds in weight.
- You will be required to work in small and/or confined spaces.
Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
- Experience leading a technical or professional team, to include assignment and coordination of work, resolving conflicts and project management.
- Experience applying radiological controls, nuclear engineering, or health physics knowledge as applied to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.
- Experience planning, executing, and/or evaluating radiological drills and/or exercises.
- Experience managing complex technical programs while coordinating with internal and external stakeholders.

Successful completion of a professional engineering degree. To be acceptable, the program must: 1) lead to a bachelor's degree (or higher) in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.
OR
Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. Evidence of having successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico The FE examination is not administered by the U. Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in the basic requirements under paragraph A (above). The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of an engineering program as described in paragraph A (above)ORSuccessful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a bachelor's degree in engineering, provided the applicant has had at least one year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. Ordinarily, there should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience, e.g., in interdisciplinary positions.

Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

Combination of education and experience courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.
