ESL Language Facilitator (Instructional Assistant)Union County Public SchoolsJob DescriptionPosition Title: ESL Language Facilitator (Instructional Assistant)Term of Employment: 10 monthsFLSA Exemption Status: Non-ExemptPay Grade:Job Summary: To assist the teacher in the instruction of limited-English proficient (LEP) students in the regular classroom setting in order to improve academic success and the dropout rate.Essential Job Functions:Support the classroom environment in a manner that helps LEP students to succeed.Plans and prepares for the instructional activities with the classroom teacher.Works with small groups of LEP students to reinforce material initially produced by the teacher.Assists with individual LEP students in need of special attention.Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work assigned by the teacher.Provides personalized support through the interpretation of important terminology and concepts so that LEP students have increased access to content.Meets the diverse needs of LEP students relative to improving achievement and making the school experience meaningful, thus improving the dropout rate.Provides support to classroom teachers in meeting the needs of LEP students at different levels of English language proficiency.Provides support to LEP students to help them meet the same rigorous state content area assessments and achievement standards as other students.Provides scaffolding supports to assist LEP students in learning the state curriculum as they develop language skills.Duties & Responsibilities:Participate in appropriate in-service activities.Attends meetings of the school as directed.Attend student events to demonstrate genuine interest in the life of the students.Observe student performance and assist LEP students in work as it is being done.Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with others.Performs such other tasks and assumes responsibilities as may be assigned by the classroom teacher or school administrator.Minimum Qualifications:High school diploma or equivalent.For Title I Schools, the following is qualifications as the Board may required: Associate's degree or 48 hours of college credit or verified HQ status from another source.Possess an understanding of the cultural differences and needs of the Latino community.Bilingual with a command of both English and Spanish, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Job Knowledge:Knowledge of office practices and procedures.Knowledge of mathematical aptitude.Knowledge of business letter writing and memos.Knowledge of planning principles.Type of Skill and/or Required Licensing/Certifications:Skills in operating a computer with word processing, spreadsheet and desktop publishing applications.Communication/Interactions:Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.Ability to compile and summarize information.Ability to resolve problems and situations with sound judgement.Ability to demonstrate proper telephone etiquette.Ability to maintain confidentiality in matters relating to the school system.Ability to exercise independent judgement and initiative in completing work assignments.Ability to compose correspondence independently.Ability to work in the absence of supervision.Customer Requirements:Physical requirements: Ability to lift and/or carry 30 lbs. Must be able to work in an office atmosphere for the duration of the work day.Interpersonal Communication: Ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information including giving instructions to subordinates and receiving instructions, assignments, and/or directions from superiors.Language ability: Fluent in English and Spanish languages. Ability to correspond in both verbal and written communications.Intelligence: Ability to apply principles or rational systems as applied to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists, to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral diagrammatic, or scheduled form.Verbal aptitude: Comfortable with public speaking. Ability to dictate correspondence. Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions.Numerical aptitude: Ability to utilize mathematical formulas, to add and subtract totals, multiply and divide, and to determine percentages and decimals.Motor coordination: Must be able to operate typical office equipment.Interpersonal temperament: Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.Physical communication: Ability to talk and listen.
