About the Organization / Department

The Accessibility Compliance Office (ACO), within the City of Boston Streets Cabinet, ensures all actions of the Streets Cabinet comply with governing Civil Rights and Disability Laws. The office conducts design reviews, compliance assessments, and public-facing support to maintain accessibility standards across Boston's public infrastructure. Location Boston City Hall, Office 714; Off-Campus Field Sites Hours of Operation 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM (flexible based on course schedule) May be expected to work outdoors Background This position is offered through the RCC Student Jobs Program (Learn & Earn). Position Summary

The Construction Management Intern supports accessibility compliance through fieldwork, design review, and public infrastructure assessment. Interns assist with sidewalk and roadway construction layout, curb ramp design, and customer service inquiries related to accessibility. Work includes both office-based review and outdoor field engagement.


Duties and Responsibilities

Resolve public inquiries ? Address customer service issues and assess sidewalk-related accessibility concerns.


Process refund requests ? Coordinate sidewalk deposit refund requests, verify documentation, and communicate updates.


Support construction planning ? Assist with planning, preparation, and layout for sidewalk and roadway construction.


Conduct fieldwork ? Assist with in-field layout and design of curb ramps and sidewalks.


Perform compliance reviews ? Apply civil engineering principles to review designs for accessibility compliance.


Complete related tasks ? Perform additional duties as assigned.


Academic Internship Structure


This is an Academic Internship placement. Students receiving academic credit must complete 150 hours during the semester and satisfy the requirements of the applicable RCC internship course/program. Internship hours must be documented separately from any other student employment hours.


Concurrent Federal Work-Study

A student may hold a separate Federal Work-Study position while completing this Academic Internship. The FWS position must be a different position with its own job description, duties, supervisor/placement record, and timekeeping. FWS work hours may not be applied toward the 150-hour Academic Internship requirement.

Requirements

Must be enrolled in an academic internship course for academic credit


Must demonstrate the ability to work in the United States.


Enrolled in an undergraduate/workforce development program majoring in Management, Engineering or closely related field.


Ability to travel independently to City Hall and field sites


Strong communication and customer service skills


Ability to make accurate mathematical calculations


Ability to follow written and oral instructions


Ability to exercise good judgment and attention to detail


Preferred Qualifications

Experience with construction or engineering concepts


Comfort working outdoors and navigating public infrastructure


Interest in public service or municipal operations



Additional Information:

Supervision & Academic Learning

The internship site supervisor provides role-specific guidance, feedback, and oversight. The student is responsible for meeting RCC academic internship requirements, documenting completion of the required 150 hours, and completing any course-based assignments, reflections, or evaluations required by the applicable academic program.


Classification & Reporting

For CESJ and institutional reporting, this placement must be coded as an Academic Internship and must not be reported as Federal Work-Study or Learn & Earn. Any separate FWS or Learn & Earn position held by the same student must be recorded independently.
