Job Description:

Medical Assistant - OncologyFunctions as a member of the clinic patient care team performing clinical tasks and procedures to support the delivery of care. Provides administrative support to the clinic.

POSITION SUMMARY

Functions as a member of the clinic patient care team performing clinical tasks and procedures to support the delivery of care. Provides administrative support to the clinic.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provides support for the Bay Area Hospital Ambulatory Services staff, including physicians
• Prepares patients for the health care visit by directing and/or accompanying them to the examining room; provides examination gowns and drapes; assists in positioning patients for the examination
• Verifies patient information by interviewing the patient; reviews and/or records medical history and current medications, takes accurate patient weight, vital signs, and confirms the purpose of the visit or treatment
• Supports patient care delivery by helping health care providers during examinations

• Organizes patient scheduling, prepares patient charts, retrieves and files patient medical records, x-rays, and other medical images
• Maintains all files and keeps filing up-to-date
• Collects blood specimens from patients of all ranges of age and uses correct tubes and handling for appropriate testing and labels specimens accurately
• Prepare and administer injections(intramuscular, intradermal, and subcutaneous) as directed by the physician or licensed provider
• Answers multi-lined telephone system, takes telephone referrals, schedules patient appointments
• Coordinates care between provider and patient by communicating messages and completing tasks consistent with the medical assistant scope of practice.
• Provides secretarial/receptionist services in an efficient and professional manner
• Prepares daily patient billing (professional and technical) and enters charges into computer systems as needed
• Performs daily, weekly and monthly statistics
• Contacts insurance providers, obtaining appropriate referral numbers, pre-authorizations, and pre-certifications
• Works with the Hospital and Ambulatory Services computer systems, registers patients, obtains admission and billing information, orders lab work, and distributed reports
• Assists the director in developing, preparing and documenting State, Federal and Joint Commission requirements
• Orders office supplies as necessary
• Ensures assigned areas are adequately stocked, cleaned and organized
• Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshoots breakdowns, maintains supplies, performs preventative maintenance and calls for repairs, if necessary
• Initiates orders specific to medical assistant protocols for providers to complete and sign.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Demonstrates the ability to use a personal computer and various software programs applicable to the position
• Demonstrates the ability to operate applicable office equipment
• Exhibits the ability to deal effectively interdepartmentally & with the public
• Exhibits the ability to maintain confidentiality, think and act independently with minimal supervision
• Medical Terminology
• Maintains regular, consistent and punctual attendance at the assigned job location
• Demonstrates excellent written and oral communication skills

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES/DEGREES

• American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Certified Medical Assistant or obtain within 16 months of hire
• College level education in secretarial sciences preferred
• Completion of basic medical terminology preferred
• High School diploma or equivalent preferred

EXPERIENCE

• One (1) year recent medical assistant experience preferred
