Position Summary Southend Pharmacy is seeking a dedicated Clinical Pharmacist - Non-Sterile Compounding to provide clinical oversight, prescription verification, and operational support for our expanding non-sterile compounding pharmacy. This role combines clinical pharmacy expertise with hands-on knowledge of non-sterile compounding to ensure the safe, accurate, and compliant preparation of customized medications. The Clinical Pharmacist is responsible for reviewing and verifying prescriptions, evaluating formulation appropriateness, overseeing non-sterile compounding activities, ensuring compliance with USP <795> , state and federal regulations, and maintaining the highest standards of quality assurance. This position serves as a clinical resource for providers, pharmacy technicians, and internal departments while supporting innovation in personalized medicine and continuous process improvement. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced, high-volume environment, effectively managing concurrent provider and patient inquiries while navigating multiple systems, including dual monitors and LifeFile, with exceptional accuracy and efficiency. - Review, interpret, and verify prescriptions for compounded non-sterile medications to ensure clinical appropriateness, dosing accuracy, and patient safety.
- Evaluate patient-specific information to support individualized therapeutic recommendations when appropriate.
- Provide clinical consultation regarding formulation selection, dosage forms, ingredient compatibility, stability, and beyond-use dating (BUD).
- Collaborate with physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other healthcare providers regarding customized compounded therapies.
- Answer clinical questions regarding compounded medications, administration, storage, and therapeutic alternatives.
- Promote safe medication practices and provide pharmaceutical expertise across the organization.
- Oversee and support daily non-sterile compounding operations in accordance with USP <795> standards.
- Verify calculations, formulations, ingredient selection, weighing, measuring, mixing, packaging, and labeling of compounded medications.
- Perform final pharmacist verification prior to dispensing.
- Ensure adherence to Master Formulation Records (MFRs), Compounding Records, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Assist with the development, validation, and implementation of new compounded formulations, dosage forms, and pharmacy processes.
- Support production of capsules, creams, gels, ointments, troches, suspensions, oral liquids, powders, and other customized dosage forms.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state pharmacy regulations, including USP <795> , FDA guidance applicable to 503A compounding pharmacies, DEA requirements, and Texas State Board of Pharmacy regulations.
- Maintain complete and accurate pharmacy documentation, including:
- Master Formulation Records (MFRs)
- Compounding Records
- Batch Documentation
- Equipment Cleaning Logs
- Quality Assurance Documentation
- Ingredient and Lot Traceability Records
- Participate in internal audits, regulatory inspections, and quality reviews.
- Investigate, document, and resolve compounding deviations, errors, and quality events.
- Ensure proper documentation and inventory control of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and compounding supplies.
- Support pharmacy quality assurance initiatives to ensure product consistency, accuracy, and regulatory compliance.
- Review compounded formulations for stability, compatibility, and pharmaceutical integrity.
- Participate in root cause analyses and corrective and preventive action (CAPA) activities.
- Assist in developing and updating pharmacy policies, procedures, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Identify opportunities to improve workflow, efficiency, documentation, and patient safety.
- Train, mentor, and evaluate pharmacy technicians on non-sterile compounding procedures and documentation requirements.
- Support ongoing staff competency assessments and continuing education initiatives.
- Educate providers and internal staff regarding compounded medications, dosage forms, stability, storage requirements, and patient counseling considerations.
- Foster a collaborative culture focused on quality, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with pharmacy leadership to optimize workflow, staffing, and production scheduling.
- Monitor inventory levels of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), excipients, packaging materials, and compounding supplies.
- Assist with vendor coordination and inventory management to ensure uninterrupted operations.
- Support new product development initiatives and expansion of the pharmacy's personalized medicine portfolio.
- Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) or Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy.
- Active, unrestricted Texas Pharmacist License in good standing.
- Minimum of 1-3 years of pharmacist experience in a 503A compounding pharmacy , retail compounding pharmacy, specialty pharmacy, or similar pharmacy environment.
- Experience with non-sterile compounding strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of USP <795> standards and pharmacy compounding regulations.
- Working knowledge of pharmaceutical calculations, dosage forms, ingredient compatibility, formulation techniques, and documentation standards.
- Demonstrated experience managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-volume pharmacy environment while navigating multiple systems and maintaining exceptional accuracy and attention to detail.
- Strong customer service and communication skills with the ability to professionally de-escalate challenging situations, resolve provider and patient concerns, and deliver solutions while maintaining regulatory compliance and a patient-centered experience.
- Proficiency using pharmacy management systems, prescription processing software, and electronic health record (EHR/EMR) platforms to accurately review, verify, document, and process prescriptions in a high-volume pharmacy environment.
- Experience developing or optimizing compounded formulations.
- Experience using LifeFile pharmacy software or similar pharmacy management systems to support prescription processing, workflow management, provider communication, and patient services.
- Knowledge of FDA guidance applicable to 503A compounding pharmacies.
- Familiarity with Master Formulation Records (MFRs) and compounding documentation.
- Experience with pharmacy management systems and compounding software.
- Strong understanding of pharmaceutical calculations, formulation science, stability, and compatibility.
- Board Certification in Pharmacotherapy (BCPS) preferred but not required.
