Assistant Director

Summary Assistant Director of Student Leadership and Involvement provides strong educational, social, and leadership development-oriented co‑curricular experiences that enhance student learning and campus life. Reporting to the Director, the Assistant Director manages all aspects of the Fraternity and Sorority Life program, supervises student staff, coordinates large‑scale events, and supports divisional initiatives as appropriate. Responsibilities and Essential Duties Manage all aspects of the Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) Community at Michigan Tech. Advise the FSL governing councils and the Order of Omega honor society. Plan and organize educational opportunities for FSL including retreats, council/chapter transitions, officer training, new member education, and risk prevention/harm reduction. Work alongside a multi‑departmental coalition to design and implement evidence‑based hazing prevention strategies to transform campus culture through unified education, policy advocacy, and data‑driven intervention. Support and help facilitate community, council, and chapter‑specific events including recruitment, the Fraternity and Sorority Life Awards, Greek Week, Blood Drive, and Meet the Greeks/Greekend. Maintain contact with FSL officers, advisors, national representatives, alumni, and other stakeholders, actively involving them in the student development process. Respond appropriately to behavioral, academic, and other issues that arise within the FSL community, offering guidance, submitting appropriate reports, and making referrals for students in need of assistance. Assist organizations in understanding and adhering to campus policies and serve as a conduct advisor when requested. Support students and organizations in connecting to local service opportunities through management of our service platform and Community Service listserv. Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate student employees. Act on behalf of the Director in their absence and represent the department’s mission and programs at university‑wide activities and events. Serve as the primary Student Leadership & Involvement contact and resource for assigned Registered Student Organizations (RSOs). Process new RSO requests according to Board of Trustees and Student Leadership and Involvement policies. Maintain RSO records and archives. Regularly review RSO constitutions and by‑laws and advise organizations of needed updates and revisions. Consult with and provide guidance to RSOs on topics such as organizational management, recruitment, fundraising, financial management, event planning, leadership development, and university policy. Advise student organizations on risk mitigation to reduce individual, organizational, and institutional risk and liability. Assist with the planning and implementation of department‑led events and programs, including Late Night Programming, Tech Traditions, and HuskyGOLD. Develop, propose, and manage approved budgets based on data and program requirements. Assist in marketing departmental events/initiatives and maintaining departmental social media accounts. Assist with collecting program data and other evidence to understand student needs, student learning, and programmatic outcomes. Engage in policy and procedure development in collaboration with others in the department, division, and the institution that prioritizes student success and well‑being. Serve on committees within the department, division, and the University. Work evening and weekend hours as appropriate to fulfill job functions. Actively create an inclusive, welcoming, and professional work environment for staff, students, and visitors. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives. Apply safety‑related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work. Perform other mission‑critical and position‑specific duties as requested based on operational needs. Required Education and Certifications Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university is required. Required Experience Two years of experience at a college or university in student activities and/or a related field. One year of experience advising a student organization. One year of experience planning, organizing, and executing large events/projects. Desirable Education and/or Experience Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Two or more years of experience with social Greek letter organizations in a leadership or advisory capacity. Experience facilitating leadership training and development. Experience assessing and mitigating risk. Required Knowledge, Skills, and/Or Abilities Proven track record of creating a collaborative and creative work and team environment. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural differences and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff. Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment. Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects, services, activities, etc. in a timely and professional manner in a fast‑paced and results‑oriented environment. Demonstrated ability to work evening and weekend hours based on operational needs. Demonstrated proficiency using advanced features of Google Suite. Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/Or Abilities Strong working knowledge of National Panhellenic Conference and North‑American Interfraternity Conference policies and best practices. Experience with Greek membership selection processes and risk management procedures. Knowledge of student development theories, learning theories, and other theories related to the profession. Knowledge of assessment methodologies including elements of design, data collection, analysis, and reporting. Ability to design basic brochures, event flyers, and/or newsletters. Knowledge of social media platforms and general ability to manage accounts, postings, and messages. Demonstrated success in, or potential future contributions to, working with persons with a wide variety of backgrounds and viewpoints. Work Environment and Physical Demands Moving small‑to‑medium sized boxes of materials in and out of office during special events; driving personal or university vehicles or golf‑carts during special events to transport materials and supplies to events; noise level is usually low to moderate.
