Position Title: Per Diem Caregiver
Reports to: Operations Manager
Employment Status: Per Diem
FLSA Status: Nonexempt
Salary: $40,000/year + OVERTIME PAY
Position Summary:
The Per Diem Caregiver provides direct care, supervision, support, and advocacy for residents living in the organization's Adult Foster Care homes. This position serves as a flexible coverage resource responsible for filling staffing gaps, including shifts identified with minimal notice, while maintaining high standards of resident care, professionalism, safety, and policy compliance. The Per Diem Caregiver must be capable of working effectively across multiple homes, adapting to varying resident needs, team dynamics, and operational requirements while supporting continuity of care.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Coverage Support and Adaptability
o Provide staffing coverage for open shifts, call-offs, schedule gaps, emergency staffing needs, and other operational demands.
o Work effectively across multiple AFC homes with varying resident needs, support requirements, routines, and staffing teams.
o Adapt quickly to changing work environments while maintaining consistent performance, professionalism, and quality of care.
o Assist Home Managers with assigned operational duties when staffing coverage needs are reduced.
o Maintain readiness to work first shift (7:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.), second shift (3:00 p.m.–11:00p.m.), third shift (11:00 p.m.–7:00 a.m.), weekends, holidays, and emergency coverage as needed.
2. Resident Care and Safety
o Provide direct care and assistance to residents in accordance with individual care plans, physician directives, company policies, and regulatory requirements.
o Assist residents with activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, incontinence care, feeding, mobility assistance, and transfers.
o Administer medications according to established procedures and training requirements.
o Monitor resident wellbeing and promptly report changes in condition, health concerns, incidents, injuries, or safety risks.
o Promote resident dignity, independence, choice, and quality of life while maintaining a safe and supportive environment.
o Follow emergency procedures and resident-specific protocols during medical, behavioral, environmental, or other emergencies.
3. Behavioral Intervention and Resident Engagement
o Utilize positive engagement, redirection, and re-engagement techniques to support residents experiencing behavioral, emotional, or cognitive challenges.
o Respond appropriately to resident behaviors including aggression, elopement risk, hallucinations, excessive touching, inappropriate comments, or other behaviors that may pose a risk to the resident or others.
o Implement approved support strategies and follow established behavioral and emergency response protocols.
o Develop creative and individualized approaches to resident engagement that promote meaningful participation in activities and daily routines.
o Maintain resident safety while using sound judgment and approved intervention techniques.
4. Policy Compliance and Operational Excellence
o Demonstrate thorough knowledge and consistent application of company policies, procedures, protocols, and resident care standards.
o Complete all required resident documentation accurately, thoroughly, and within established timeframes.
o Utilize company systems and technology platforms in accordance with organizational requirements.
o Identify, document, and report on policy violations, safety concerns, incidents, and operational issues through appropriate channels.
o Maintain all required trainings, certifications, and competencies.
5. Communication and Professional Conduct
o Communicate professionally and effectively with residents, coworkers, Home Managers, administration, guardians, medical providers, case managers, and other stakeholders.
o Demonstrate professional conduct, emotional maturity, teamwork, and respect in all homes and work environments.
o Seek guidance from appropriate leadership when uncertain about procedures, communication requirements, or resident-related concerns.
o Attend and actively participate in management meetings to remain current on organizational updates, policy changes, and operational expectations.
o Maintain confidentiality and protect resident and employee information in accordance with company policies and applicable regulations.
6. Transportation and Community Integration
o Safely transport residents in company vehicles to appointments, community activities, day programs, shopping trips, and other approved destinations.
o Maintain compliance with all driving, safety, and vehicle operation requirements.
o Assist residents entering and exiting vehicles as needed.
o Promote resident participation and inclusion during community activities while maintaining supervision and safety.
7. Training and Leadership Support
o Serve as a role model by demonstrating strong caregiving practices, professionalism, and adherence to organizational standards.
o May provide on-the-job training, guidance, and support to new caregivers as assigned.
o Share knowledge regarding company procedures, resident care expectations, and operational practices.
o Report performance concerns, training needs, and operational issues to appropriate leadership.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
o High school diploma or GED required.
o Additional healthcare-related education, certification, or licensure is preferred but not required
Experience
o Minimum of five (5) years of direct care, caregiving, Adult Foster Care, group home, Direct Support Professional, or related experience required.
o Minimum of one (1) year of employment with the organization required.
o Experience working successfully with individuals with developmental disabilities, mental health conditions, behavioral challenges, or similar populations preferred.
o Experience working in multiple residential care settings preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
o Valid driver's license required.
o Current proof of automobile insurance required.
o CPR certification required.
o First Aid certification required.
o Recipient Rights training required.
o Medication administration training required.
o Ability to obtain and maintain all required trainings and certifications mandated by the organization, Community Mental Health, licensing authorities, or regulatory agencies.

o Comprehensive knowledge of company policies, procedures, protocols, and resident care requirements.
o Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

o Ability to adapt quickly to different homes, resident needs, and staffing teams.

o Ability to effectively de-escalate situations and implement resident engagement strategies.
o Ability to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.
o Ability to accurately complete electronic documentation and utilize computer-based systems.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

While performing the duties of this position, the employee may be required to:
o Frequently stand and walk for extended periods.
o Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and perform repetitive motions.
o Assist residents with mobility, positioning, and transfers.
o Occasionally push or pull wheelchairs and other mobility-related equipment.
o Occasionally lift, carry, push, pull, or move up to 50 pounds with or without assistance and participate in team lifting when necessary.
o Operate motor vehicles safely and travel between company locations as required.
o Use computers, tablets, smartphones, and other electronic devices for documentation and communication.
Work is performed primarily within residential AFC homes. Employees may be exposed to:
o Bodily fluids and bloodborne pathogens.
o Cleaning agents, disinfectants, and household chemicals.
o Residents displaying aggressive, disruptive, or unpredictable behaviors.
o Outdoor weather conditions while transporting residents or performing resident-related activities.
o Limited exposure to secondhand smoke.
o The position requires the ability to respond appropriately during emergencies and maintain composure in fast-paced and changing environments.
Attendance and Scheduling Expectations
Attend all required management meetings.
Maintain the availability necessary to fulfill the operational needs of the position.
Availability for first, second, and third shifts is strongly preferred.
Availability for weekends, holidays, overnights, and emergency coverage is expected.
The position is designed to provide staffing support across multiple homes and is expected to maintain a workload averaging approximately 35 hours per week, subject to organizational and resident care needs.
Employees may decline up to three offered shifts per month when otherwise eligible under the Per Diem Caregiver agreement.
Employees may decline shifts offered with less than 1.5 hours' notice without penalty.
Employees are expected to accept shifts offered with 1.5 hours or more notice except as otherwise permitted under the Per Diem Caregiver agreement.
