TPWD - Seasonal Laboratory Technician I (Wildlife CWD Lab Technician)

General Description Under the direction of the TPWD Wildlife Health Specialist and the Assistant Section Head of Serology at Texas AM Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory, this entry‑level to routine laboratory position processes tissues harvested from cervid species (e.g., deer and elk) for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) diagnostic testing. The position is stationed at TVMDL in College Station and is performed under moderate supervision with minimal latitude for independent judgment. The role also includes performing additional duties as assigned and complying with all TPWD rules, regulations and procedures. Responsibilities Process tissues harvested from cervid species for CWD diagnostic testing. Perform routine laboratory procedures under moderate supervision. Carry out additional duties as assigned. Comply with all TPWD rules, regulations, and procedures of TVMDL. Qualifications Minimum qualifications: Education: Graduation from High School or GED. Experience: Seasonal Lab Tech I Tier A – no experience required; TierB – one season as a TPWD CWD seasonal field or lab technician; TierC – two seasons as a TPWD CWD seasonal field or lab technician. Licensure: Must possess or be able to obtain, within 30 days of employment, a valid State driver and license. Preferred qualifications: Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with or working toward a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Science. Experience preparing diagnostic samples using sharp instruments. Experience as a TPWD Wildlife Division seasonal technician. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of chronic wasting disease and deer anatomy. Knowledge of deer‑necropsy techniques and standard laboratory safety procedures. Basic laboratory techniques and use of laboratory and research equipment. Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and Outlook. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to establish and maintain work relationships, provide customer service, and meet deadlines. Ability to work under stressful conditions, independently with little or no supervision, and follow TPWD safety program. Ability to collate data, maintain accurate records, and prepare written correspondence. Working Conditions Required to work 40 hours per week from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday‑Friday. May be required to work overtime as necessary. Must receive a pre‑exposure rabies vaccination series; costs are covered by TPWD Wildlife Division.
